[Mk2] [Turbo] My mr2 aint sustaining a charge?

Post by micka »

I had my alternator reconditioned, but now the battery light on the dash and the light to the right of the battery light lights up?

My car is just running off the battery and aint charging. When i switch my headlights on they slowly dim and the battery dies (but the car can still drive until the battery dies).

I dont know what to check now... Any suggestions please.

Thank you

I have tried 2 batteries, and it is not the batteries. The 3 wires at the back of the alternator should have 12v going to each of the 3 pins which i will check.

I started my car and everything was fine until it played up again.

What do each of the 3 wires go to? And which wire is likely to be faulty causing this problem? :thumleft:

One is a 12v feed to the alternator, one is part of the ignition circuit and i'm not sure what the other does!

On my car it was the middle of the 3 wires that led from the fusebox in the engine bay to the alternator. This was bodged with 2 scotch connectors and a bit of wire to test it and all was well.

Can't really say what's causing the problem for definite as we don't know which plug (if any) is down on voltage!

Alernator problems

Post by andyjmr2turbo »

I had an annoying problem like this on my alternator... In the engine bay where the fuse box, there should be a thick white lead that is bolted.. with the engine ignition off removed this cable and using a multimeter on the 10A current range attached one cable to the cable you have remove making sure it doesnt touch any metalwork... attach the other cable of the multimeter to the bolt that you have removed the cable from.....you will now be able to measure any current that is been drawn which should be minimal if all doors are closed and no accesories are switched on....mine was drawing in excess of 1amp indicating a faulty regulator pack or staor windings in the alternator.....something to check even if the alernator has been reconditioned.....
