how does the the air filter sytem connect to 1986 models

Post by turtle3 »

Hi there, When I bought my mk 1 someone had fitted a k&n air filter to it and had thrown away all the original. I have located an original air filter with all fittings but have no idea what is involved. I can see how the filter will connect but what else is involved. I have been told it is reaaly complicated set up what about the black hoses that run to the tvis and is there an electrical connection needed? a sensor or something?? I cannot find the blueprints or parts catalogue for the filter assembly and my haynes book doesnt show the set up. thanks in advance for any info turtle

Its not that difficult. i guess the easiest way to explain it really is for you to see a stock early setup.

I don't have any pics as i've ditched mine for a K&N on the throttle body.

But basically it runs from the throttle body to the air filter which is situated between the battery and the engine/boot bulkhead. then some plastic duct pipe goes around the battery to pick up air from just behind the passenger bulkhead. An idle up valve connects to the top of the throttle body, but there's nothing complicated in that.

Nothing runs to the TVIS from the air filter. It really is just one connection to make to the idle up valve which then plugs into the back of the air filter housing.

86 is borderline so might be a post revision, in which case take off the passenger side compartment in the rear boot and see if there is the remnants of a filterbox and ducting there.

86 is not borderline, not really. Revision came in 87. They guy has already mentioned that he doesn't have airbox trunking or a hole for it into his boot so its defo an early car.
