MR2 Newbie

Post by pcp »

Hiya peeps, 1st post on the forum 8-[

have been thinking about getting an MR2 for a few months now, and just browsing about at the minute, do any of you kind hearted chaps want to give a newbie some advice? :)

My main thing is insurance prices, being over in northern ireland is a real pain in the ass, been doing some online quotes and prices vary from £1400 to £3800 depending on the spec

not knowng a great deal about cars and even less about the MR2 i started looking around the net and found this place, and some of your guys cars look sweet as :thumleft:

anways i've a few questions if any of you have the time.

as i said insurance is a BIG problem so the turbo version is out the window straight off, but what car should i go for? the ones from 90-93 seem to be the cheapest but from little research i've done it seems the later ones are better spec'ed.

whats the difference between the REV1,REV2 etc? from checking on various websites you get a whole load of conflicting info so hopefully as you guys own these cars you'll be able to set me straight.

what are the tell tale things you should look for on the MR2 when inspecting one? a lot of peole say the rear wheel arches can rust easily and the bottom of the bodywork, but this is usually hidden by the skirts.

any info welcome :) and no doubt over the coming months i'll be wrecking your head with questions until i take the plunge and buy one, then i'll be asking about mods and upgrades

cheers in advance!

Have a look at the knowledge base. There is a buying guide in there.

Good choice!

Just keep having a browse around and keep learning. Do a search on here for 'Newbie' !! as there's quite a few previous posts that can answer your questions.

And like Lauren says, check out the knowledge base. There shouldn't be any conflicting info in there.

How old are you? no claims bonus etc??

I'm 22 and insured on a turbo for £800 through Adrian Flux.

If your mr2 is a second car and you limit the milage to under 5000, AON are very good. Tel 01384 455 011 I nearly fell off my chair when they quoted me £311 fully comp!! They dont take N/C bonus into consideratioon, and the policy is a classic car type cover. I am 29, one recent crash and 3 points. Not bad eh!

Another company that was reasonable and was a regular type policy.....unlimited miles.....use for work etc....parked on street......
was Quota Car. tel 08707 709 075. This came out at £450 f/c.

Oh this was for an Mr2 turbo........1993....aprox value £4,500.

Hope this helps?

As far as i know AON only cover drivers over 30 in N.Ireland.You could try Elephant,Quinn Direct,Adrian Flux and Admiral. They all cover N.Ireland and should all quote you on an N/A if not a turbo. If you go for a UK N/A Toyota Direct will cover you and seem very keen quote wise.

cheers for the replies peeps :thumleft:

i tried tesco before, thought they would cover over here but alas they don't, the cheapest i've found so far is elephant, have to give Flux a call tomorrow, never heard of them before :)

and then all i'll have to do is find the right car, not much choice over here :(
