Hello all...

Just thought i'd introduce myself to the forum as i've only signed up today. I currently own a 2003 Civic Type-R (photo in my garage) and i'm looking at getting a Rev 5 n/a MR2 in August when the time comes to sell my Type-R. In the meantime i thought i'd sign up and gain a little more knowledge about the MR2 before i'm ready to buy one.

Welcome to the Madhouse :eye:

Just out of curiosity, why are you planning to "go 2" ?
always interests me why people choose them over their current cars..

just call me nosey :---)

No probs about being nosey! Firstly i'm having to sell my Type-R as i currently share that with my twin brother while being at uni, however we both finish in september and may go seperate ways so the time has come to get a car each. I'm really going to miss my civic, it's been extremely reliable and performs well too, particularly after some choice modifications.

Reason for choosing the MR2 was simple really, i've always wanted a two seater rear wheel drive car to have a little fun in. I've never driven a rwd before so it's a good oportunity for me to progress from front wheel drive performance hatches. Although the '2 wont match the pace of my CTR, i feel it's imortant not to jump feet first into a turbo, plus insurance is relatively cheap on the n/a's too!

In August i should have around 5k spare for a Rev 5, which i feel should get me a good example for this kind of money, particulary as it's towards the back end of summer so the demand for open tops should have decreased a little by then. Having said that, i'd prefer to go for the Coupe rather than T-bar, although the T-bar seems to be more common.

Can you really notice the difference in handling between the two? Is the flex noticible?

the Flex thing is just a myth.. (in relation to feeling it whilst driving) - maybe if you are the Stig you might be able to tell the difference but otherwise no chance.

RWD cars are completely different to handle than FWD cars (being pushed rather than pulled along) so it's a hell of a lot less forgiving  - but do things smoothly and you'll be fine - just don;t go into corners the same way you do now :eye:

above all, have fun :thumleft:

Thanks for the advice, the flex issue was really the only reason why i wanted to stay away from the T-bar. The MR2 should be a good introduction for me to rwd motoring, although I've learnt to drive smoothly in my type-r, its quite a tail-happy beast in its own right.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Andy.

eeek :? - if you think the Civic is tail happy, careful on the 2 - it's not very forgiving.. engine over the rear axle means loads of grip at the rear, but when it lets go you have to be very quick and not over compensate - fish tailing here we come  we've ALL done it  (normally in the wet - care required!!)

not trying to put you off - honest I'm not  have you sat in one before - the driving position as effin superb in my eyes 8)

I know what you mean :| my friend has one and i've heard of similar stories! I suppose it's all about taking it easy and learning the cars limits gradually, i'm a careful driver and would hate to see me pride and joy wrapped around a tree. The driving position is indeed superb, reminds me of when i was looking at buying an Elise a couple of years back, obviously the MR2 is relatively luxurious in comparison!

I'm looking forward to driving one in the summer, don't want to start looking just yet as i hate test pilots when you're selling a car, so i'd hate to do the same!

Fishtailing in the dry was one of the scariest things ever! The noise from the tyres was frightening. :pale:

Welcome Andy! :D Good luck finding a nice 2. Keeps us posted on yr situation.

I'd love a turbo, but i don't have a no claims discount (being a named driver for the previous 4 years) so i'm strugling to find anywhere that'll insure me on a turbo. I know it's going to be a bit of a step down in terms of performance compared to my current car (running around 230bhp) but a n/a should stll be a good introduction to the world of rwd cars.

There is nothing wrong with the na's. They arent as slow as people say. After all the car is nearly 20 years old. 0-60 with a few mods u can get under 7 secs which is not bad. You just dont get the turbo kick.

yeah it's very smooth - more like driving an NA to be honest... although 300HP one

when people say --.. ooo be carefull you don;t come on full boost going round a corner... it baffles me..
it's not like it's about to suddenly gain 100hp and go bazerk - certainly not on a CT20b...
