MK1: very pretty and something I've not noticed before

Post by Kelvin »

'Twas browsing the US owners club forums, as I do on a regular basis, and came across this restored MK1. Very very pretty and tempting sort of scheme for my future respray.

What didn't strike me at first and it took a few views to notice it was that the car is a coupe with no sunroof. Is this a common style on other countries cars?

here's the link to the thread;

I've often though that metal or other solid non-glass material sunroof or T-bar panels would be handy for motorsport or track day use. I know that the MSA require the MK1 Fiesta to have the sunroof welded up or a US spec metal sunroof fitted for sprint/hill climb use.

Some very nice work.

The sunroof was an optional item like the auto box. Sunrooves are popular here just as auto boxes are popular in the states. As far as I know tin tops are not common. Most people either have T tops or sunrooves here because the car is a sports car, and if you are buying one you might as well get the full package. At the time air con and cruise control, and to a degree auto boxes were considered frivolous in the uk, and most sports car purists prefer as few driver aids as possible, hense glass tops but no air con or cruise control. Other markets are another story but you'd have to hear from the horse's mouth

Basically in the US you have more choice over spec. Sunroofs are not essential as air con is stock in the US.

UK cars didn't come with very many options ie sunroofs were standard or you went for t-bar where the only real option was that of leather.

Aircon wasn't an option in the UK, neither were autos.

Its just different options for different markets so you get cars that have wind up windows, tintops, no spoilers etc. These are not rare models it simply means buyers didn't tick the relevant option boxes in Japan or the US.

Obviously on the car in the pictures they've fitted a 20v.
