How can you tell if you've been de-catted?

Post by jmachling »

I had previously thought that my Rev 3 tubby had been de-catted as there are some great woofs, pops and bangs from the exhaust pipe (Departure II).

However, after having had it MOT'd for the first time, it was tested as if it had a catalyst and passed quite easily (Fast idle CO was 0.17%, natural idle was 0.31%) which leads me to believe the cat is still in situ and there's some more power to be gained with a downpipe or decat.

Any easy way to tell without struggling with rusted studs and skinned knuckles?

TIA.

John.

the easiest method if your obviously cant see a stainless downpipe is to remove the exhuast front pipe away from the cat, at the sump end, look up it and if its got a cat, should see a honeycombe like blockage.

There's definitely no downpipe - I was just curious to know if there are any easy ways to spot a decat without getting the spanners out.

Yup... remove the lambda sensor and stick something long in there. If there is an obstruction, you have a cat in there, if not, then its either been removed, or has fallen as mine did. The guy that showed me this trick used an arc welding rod, but anything long should do the trick. A fair sized screwdriver for instance.

Fab - thanks guys! Don't know why I didn't think of that - it's one of those 'blindingly obvious when someone tells you' things. I'll give it a go.
