rear uneven brake pad wear

Post by scrimmager »

Sorry, was on a different forum, here seems more appropriate! The rear pads on my 88' MK1 are very unevenly worn, ie. hardly at all on the innner pads, very much on the outer. So much so that the outer need replacing, the inner looks almost as new. Is this something to be concerned about? cheers.

Something we've just had with Malcolm's (Tiamat's) car, I have a feeling it was due to a seized handbrake cable as the sliders were moving freely. However the piston on the other side wasn't in fantastic shape either and the pads had similar wear characteristics. :-k :-$

hmm, that sounds reasonable. My handbrake is almost non-existent. Will try and free up the whole lot then, I took it all apart and couldn't move the piston at all, was hoping it was to do with not having the right tool but maybe not! Cheers for the info.

The piston on the rear calliper needs to be screwed in, not pushed in. The indentations on the face are there to take a service tool but a pair of pliers will do.

Slacken off the cable (or remove the pin from the calliper), screw the piston all the way in and then out 180 degrees (engages the handbrake mechanism), make sure the indentations line up to fit the lug on the back of your inner pads and reassemble.

HTH
