Dealing with the big boys..

Post by jimsimoc »

Hi guys (and girls)

A few collegues and i are doing a track day on Monday. With a few days to go, im a little worried about the 'competition'! I know its not a race, but the guys have got their hands on some seriously fast cars! An R400 superlite, STi, M3, Civic R, 911, GTI-R. Can anyone give me a few helpful quick pointers so my poor little 18 year old Mk1 holds its own a little on the track?

Currently my engine is standard, although chipped. Twin pot calliper conversion. Good tyres. No previous track day experience!

Err try not to treat like its a competition and you will be fine. You can't hope to stay with R400s and the like.

Pray for rain in which case you'll reel in the R400, M3 etc. MK1s are much quicker comparitively when its wet due to their soft setup.

My best, serious type advice would be to forget about egos and concentrate on your driving. Don't worry about beating them, if you do overtake one of them then they'll have to live it down. If you don't everyone will say its a slower car etc. So you are in a no-lose situation.

Trackdays are much more about the driver than the car. I've overtaken all of the above on trackdays before. I'd say 80% driver, 20% car.

One things for sure you will have so much fun. What track are you going on and what organiser, just out of interest?

Hi Lauren

Yeah, i know its not a comp, but there is a little pride at stake.. Its at Kevil in Wiltshire (luckily im in the RAF and live within 3 miles as well, so i will be sneaking in a practice this w/e) Its been organised by motorsports-events.

As long as it suprises someone i will be happy!

Lauren is taking the spare out (weight saving) a good idea, or does it upset the balence?
