Alloy sizes

Post by Big Maka »

I am about to invest in a new set of 17 "alloys for my mkII tubby! I am struggling with what sizes look the best! I have searched the knowledgebase and couldn't come up with anything!

I currently have fully adjustable CUSCO coilovers so lowering them to the right height won't be a problem.

I have read a few other posts about sizes and they all seem to be recommending 225/40/17 for the front and then 245/45/17 for the rear!
I have heard that the alloy widths should be J7's for the front and J8's for the rear is this correct?

Please advise as I am looking to spend a lot of money and don't want to buy something that will look shoddy!!

mucho's gracias!!

I personally think that 17" are a good size if you are not going for out-and-out handling. Not sure you will get 225 on the front with a 7J wheel or 245 on 8J but someone may come along to confirm.

With 17's and to keep the rolling radius as close to stock as possible you will want 215/40 front and 245/35 rear. These are the sizes I run on but have 7.5J / 8.5J

'Look the best' is subjective. If it's looks you want then I'd go for a 17" all around or 17/18" combo. If it's performance then I'd go not as big because they get too heavy, 15/16, 16 all around or 16/17.

Whether it's for performance or not I'd go as wide as possible.

Looks:
17x7.5f (or 8") w/ 225/35 and either 17x9r 245(255)/40 or 18x9r 255/35.

Performance:
15x7f 225/45(50) and 16x9r 245/45
16x7f 215/45 (225/40) and 16x9r 245/45
16x7.5f 225/40 and 17x9r 245(255)/40

yeh dude, you said youve searched, but those sizes arnt exactly recommended, so where on earth you read them......

17s, ideally you want 215/40, and 245/35, or 235/40 rear..........

225/40 front, 245/45, WHERE you read these?
your REALLY gona struggle getting them fronts on and rears are to large, or at the very least will send the speedo quite out and could effect acceleration.....

With Tein coilovers I can't run wider than 195 on the front unless I use spacers which is what the car came with when I bought it. The problem with using spacers is that you don't get much nut thread onto the hub-bolt which worried the hell out of me so I ditched the the 205 tyres and the spacers and run 195s on the front and I'm a happy bunny knowing everything is done up nice and tight plus the slightly narrower tyres up front and 225s on the rear negates some of the tendancy to oversteer if I have a little go through some twisties. :)
