Christ Almighty! That's one hell of a smash. That bloke is lucky to be alive. Good to see he still has his sense of humour (the "t-cut" line was a belter!) and he is up and about, drinking beer etc.

It just goes to prove that you can be the best driver in the world but you can never vouch for the competencies of other drivers. Impatient dickheads who overtake when it clearly isn't safe (and then dive in in front of you at the last second) really wind me up. I get it all the time on my journey to and from work. Sometimes I feel like closing them off but it is decent people like that guy coming the other way that would pay the price. Best just to slam on the anchors and give them a two-fingered salute. It never feels like enough though.

No he is defo a giant. They had to cut the roof off the car to fit him in it. :D

I just can't believe the difference between the MR2 and the Escort. Escorts probably aren't exactly the most crash-worthy cars around, but that MR2 looks very bad in comparison - ok the roof etc got chopped by the fire brigade but still...

Might have been down to kinetic energy as to who got the worst of it...

Nasty one. Of course it'll look a bit worse due to the fire brigade cutting the lid/doors off, but still very nasty. Have to say it acts as an advocate for having an engine between you and the rest of the world...

Horific crash but i was impressed by the mr2,look at the state of the energy going on in that crash then look at the seats of the mr2.they are still seat shaped and the floor below them is still in almost normal shape.the cabin seems to have survived and that why our tall friend isnt pushing up the daisys! infact the streering wheel doesnt seem to have moved far and thats usually a major part of death in cars! so well done Mr2!!!!!

The ford has an engine in the bonnet...the MR2 has nothing but a spare wheel...im not suprised...I hope the Ford driver got a big sentence for dangerous driving too.

Hi all

Hi to you all, I am Mike the guy who was driving that MR2 :D

Firstly thanks to Jay (Quigonjay) for linking me to this....

I'll start off by saying how I am doing now and what happend then try to cover some of the points/questions made.

The accident happend on Oct 27th 2000 (sisters birthday, I forgot her card...) on the Woodhead pass. Some of you will know this as it is a great road between Manchester/Sheffield.

We were driving at around 40mph, I know this as I remember my passenger asking me to slow down after I had overtaken a lorry about 5 or 10 minutes earlier... if only I'd stayed behind it...

Anyway there was nothing I could do, I have very little memory of the accident but I recall trying to turn to the left, this meant the impact wasnt full head on and protected the passenger - I remember that keeping the car as far from Adel as possible was what I was trying to do. There was nothing I could do. I could either turn into a lorry or aim for dry stone wall... after this the only vivid memory I have was me trying to climb out of the car whilst a fireman/police man kept me in my seat whilst the roof was cut off - the next was 2 weeks later...

My injuries from top to bottom made quite an impressive list. I had brain damage, nothing too major but enough to cause short memory issue or I think its called predictive memory so day to day no major impact. I broke my shoulders a few ribs and punctured my lungs. Had a kidney removed and my liver needed some work too.

My pelvis was broken and rotated 90 degrees forward on the right hand side, the hip was dislocated and my femur no has a fixing rod inside it. All damage was to the right of my body, my knee was also damaged as was my tibia which was also pinned back together. The right foot was twisted out of its socket and again broken.

6 years on I am walking unaided and to look at would appear normal and healthy, some days my limp is noticeable others it isnt. I've just today started my first course of Cortisone(??) injections to try and remove the inflamation and arthritis.

The car that I had, I thought was quite special as I loved it. I was only just turned 24 at the time of the accident and had owned the car for about 3 months. It was an import and I am not sure on the quality of the tuning house Trust but it seemed to go like stink and handled brilliantly. The engine I know had been worked on but thankfully I never got to a stage of having to get it serviced ;)

now for a few replies to points made...

Was it my imagination or was that guy a giant

no! I'm only 6'1 but that picture was taken in my local down Oxford which is really tiny. The two friends were ikkle umpa lumpas from South Afrida (pre-requisit for bar staff?!? ;))

Does anyone know him???

not as far as I know... there wasnt really an internet forum scene back then and I'd only had the car a short while...

Puts life into perspective

aye it does but then you forget about what happend and it returns to normal...

It just goes to prove that you can be the best driver in the world but you can never vouch for the competencies of other drivers

this is a great point, one I always try to tell my friends. It doesnt matter how safe you drive or how you drive - so long as you are driving within yours and the safety limits it doesnt mean someone else isnt - I always drive bearing this in mind now... overtakes are very rare for me now

Best just to slam on the anchors and give them a two-fingered salute
I know this is tongue in cheek but the last thing anyone should do is brake! Or if possible do brake but then take your foot off the brake peddal! The reason my foot came off was due to being on the peddal, the engergy went through the foot.... mind you, I challenge anyone not to brake in a similar situation ;)

How the hell he survived that i dont know
Me neither! Or the police or hospital. I was just extremely lucky (subjective use of lucky there...) I know xxxx happens but it was always to someone else, I'd personally liked to have kept it that way and remained imortal in my own mind...

Escorts probably aren't exactly the most crash-worthy cars around, but that MR2 looks very bad in comparison

as mentioned it was kenetic energy. My closing speed was estimated at 40mph his was estimated at or slightly over 60 (NSL overtaking lorry) so he had much more energy thanks to speed + weight. Obviously we both managed to scrum speed off but thats your answer. The police reckon it was the lack of engine thus huge crumple zone that saved me as it took all that energy.

hope the Ford driver got a big sentence for dangerous driving too

how does 9 points, 150 fine and 55 costs grab your attention?

It wasnt intended, it was an accident and I am sure (or rather I hope) the driver learnt his lesson. I bear no ill well on him, we've all done overtakes and thought "xxxx that was close" or rather most of us have, so I'd be hypocritical to have a go at him.

As a result I do have medical issues but I also have a nice pay out - where there is blame, there is a claim ;) Sorry if your premiums have gone up, I'll buy you a pint if it has
