Measuring the dB of exhausts

Post by Sidewinder »

I know it's an oldie question, but can anyone remind me as to how this is done, please? I've finally got my hands on a sound pressure doobrie, and can only remember things like "45 degrees" and "a metre from the exhaust" etc.

From Bookatrack...

"0.5m, 45° from exhaust 3/4 max RPM"

Have fun

easy way to do it is simply to get a bit of wood and place the noise meter 0.5m along it. Just tape it to the wood then you can easily repeat a 0.5m distance.

Also - check the measurement scale you're using on the meter corresponds to the one you want to use to measure the sound levels.

Just curious, which exhaust are you measuring?

FWIW the standard Rev2 one is 96 or so dB(A?)

Absolutely no idea. :D I never got round to asking Patrick when I bought the car off him!
Single exit, large bore, no markings on it (apart from a Jasma sticker). My car-enthusiast chums reckon it's loud, but I've heard much louder exhausts at JAE from MR2s.

A crap picture of the back-end of the motor, but the best shot I have:

Doesn't a 'Jasma' marking represent that it conforms to Jap noise regs of 98db? mind you if you are catless that will make a difference i guess
