My autoglass horror

Post by Goldy »

After getting my car broken into around 2 weeks ago, I used autoglass to fit my replacement drivers door window, mainly because it was convienient. It cost me £250 and they fitted it on the monday. When I was driving the car back I noticed the window was whistling and that my door controls were loose, there was also a small crack in the trim around the inside door handle. I called them and took it back to them that day. They refitted my door contols, and we diagnosed the whistling as there being a 3mm gap towards the bottom of the window where it should press against the seal. Autoglass decided that this was a warped piece of glass and would replace it with a genuine toyota piece. 2 weeks later and I still hadn't heard anything, so I phoned them this morning, they told me that the glass was in but the person who was dealing with my problem was busy and she would call me back within the hour... So i waited around 3 hours and decided to drive down there. They did NOT apologise for not phoning me back, and simply told me to hang on whilst they fitted my window. I waited 2 hours in the waiting room before someone called me to tell my my car was ready. I collected the keys and went to have a look. The first thing I noticed was that whoever had fitted the window had cracked the interior door handle trim in THREE places. The window had a half centimeter gap along the corner closest to the mirror on the outside. And the entire door car was loose. I went back inside and asked them to have a look again. They told me that it must be a "warped" piece of glass, and that its just the way it sits.. Which it wasnt.. I sat around for another hour, and eventually someone came and said it was sorted... I came and had a look and the 5 mm gap in the corner had shrunk to a 3 mm gap all the way along the window. I pointed this out again.... and the fitter went into the back office, and comes out to tell me that there were 2 brackets missing from my window that holds it in the correct position. I have to go back later this week to hopefully get it sorted out again.

Correct me if i'm missing something here... but couldnt he have told me that an hour earlier instead of wasting my time. They seem to be completely incompetent. I don't know if this is just my local branch or accross the board. I worked at a mercades garage for a bit, and I know full well that you can fit a window in less than 20 mins. You would expect a half decent job when the guy who sold you the window on the phone tells you that it'll be fitted like it was just out of the factory..

Has anyone else had any problems with them?

I'm writing a letter of complaint later this week.... My time is far to valuable to spend a monday afternoon waiting for some nonce to sort out a window that should have been fitted properly the 1st time.

Not good :? Although I have read that alligning the side windows on the MR2 are extreemly difficult to get correct.

Autoglass did a good job replacing my windscreen on my Fiesta the other week, but there are obviously less things to go wrong with that

Sorry to hear your '2 was broken into BTW

Sounds like a bunch of can't be ar$ed monkeys to me.

I had to strip the door recently to replace a window regulator on the G/F's N/A. Refitting the glass isn't easy but it certainly isn't difficult.
It took me a couple of hours to re-fit the door and re-align the window at a lesuirely pace.

These so called professionals sinmply can't be ar$ed. They must be hoping you'll take it somewhere else to get their inept workmanship sorted.

Don't forget to ask for compensation for damage to your motor.

This is an example of why I always do my own work on the car. I wouldn't trust anyone else to spend the time and effort to get it right.

Hope you get the right result.

Aparantly they are going to sort everything out... And if they don't I will be seeking compensation... They couldn't work out what had happened to these two brackets. So i'm pretty sure that whoever did the job 1st time round removed them, because the window fitted perfectly before.. I would have fitted the window myself but i'm not a particulary mechanical person, I prefer working on the electrics and simple tasks that arent too messy :P

P.S see post on chav scum if u were wondering what happened to the window...

If the window was just broken into like mine was a few weeks ago then they should only have touched the top two adjuster bolts, and to put them back where they were is easy cos theres a ring on the door around the hole where the washer and bolt has been for the last 13 or so years!

All they had to do is to clear all the broken glass crap thats lying in the bottom of the door, unbolt the remains of the old window and simply drop the new window in and tighten it all up..took me about 1 1/2 hours to do! These guys sound like incompetant/careless fools to me..hope you get your money back

when i did my windows, in fact stripped the etire dorrs for new ones.. it was difficult to rebuild, however,

FIRST TIME JUST SET THE CORRECT ADJUSTMENTS AND NO HASSLES. INFACT I HAVE DONE A FEW DOORS NOW.

PEICE OF p1$$... first time u scratch your head.. but with distructions .. not a problem

I've had crap service from Autoglass; the fitters just want to get to the next job, so 'sod your car' is the attitude i've witnessed. Seals that have come out, lost screws etc etc

...and I hate anyone touching the interior trim to do any work to the car, they're just so clumsy, the worst is the e/window console. Everybody pulls it from the bottom 'snap'

My boyfriends sister went through a run of bad luck with her car - getting a crack in the windscreen.
Her insurance dictated that it had to go to Autoglass to get it fixed, but they screwed it up so that it let in water.
So it went back, and that one 'wobbled' when you shut the door, and they didn't refit the central mirror
Back again...
Bad luck and another crack! (what are the chances of that happening eh?)
New one let water in again, missing screws from exterior trim

...

I hope she doesn't have any more bad luck.... Autoglass must have shares in the people who make the glass seeing as they F**k it up all the time... What should have been 2 screens ended up being 5...

I tend to agree that they don't seem to put any effort in to the work. The fact that I have to complain each time to get it done right is pretty ordinary in their opinion.. The fact is that I just want it done right... They said they would phone me back tomorrow... i'm betting they don't tbh, In which case the letter of complaint is definately getting sent!!!!!!
