MOT emissions

Post by Turbolad »

On my v5 for a rev3 turbo, it states max emissions limit at CO 3.5% and HC 0.12. Does this appear on all v5's and will this be evidence enough to support a non cat MOT test? ...

... i've been having trouble persuading MOT testers that my M plate '95 turbo can be subject to a non cat test!

Just checked my 1994 rev 3's V5C form (the new A4 booklet one).

The emissions details are all blank.

I've yet to experience the joy of an MOT in it, but as I recall it was during 1995 when the DLVA changed the requirements for imported cars emissions.

Searching on here should bring up previous posts - I even remember seeing a copy of the MOT tester's book.

Not sure if this helps you a lot though.

IIRC, your car being a 1995 car, you will have to have a 'cat' test, therefore your only allowed 0.3% !!

A 'de-cat' test is where you're allowed 3.5% which is for 1994 cars and older. so if you get away with the mot station allowing the 3.5%, keep quite as you will be a lucky boy!

I think it was july 1995 when the n plate came out that required the cat test (rev 4).

just wondered why it would be stated at the non cat levels on the v5.

Have currently got the car in bits in the garage after taking the downpipe off, and after this latest 'find' am not sure whether to put the downpipe back on or the cat, and have to change that again after the test.

matey, m plate turbos are fine for non cat tests - get the MOT tester to go through his guide book,

he wont find an sw20 chassis with macthing 3S- GTE engine before an N plate so therefore no cat test

did it 4 months ago - you'll be fine. be nice but firm and get the tester to follow the rules and you will be ok

Yep, do a quick search on the forum. Basically ring the VOSA helpline, explain what you're doing - (import, Car / engine not sold in UK, therefore non cat test?) and they should confirm providing it was registered in Japan before July 95 you're OK.

Even better, write to them and get confirmation in writing back from them - I did this a few years back and nothing impresses an MOT tester more than an official letter from VOSA to you.

that's this years headache over and done with.
opted to put the cat on for the test.
After it was done I showed the tester the v5, he went away and sked someone and came back telling me it looked OK and I ought to take the cat off for more power!

on another note, I was starting to get scared when it took the helper lad 3 attempts to find the engine ....
