Which car?

Post by wizzer »

I've been in the process of looking for an MR2 now since the start of January. Nothing comes along, then all of a sudden there's a couple of possibles! So my question is this, which of the following cars would you go for :

1) 1994 Black MR2 GTS Turbo T-bar, well looked after, cam-belt done, turbo reconditioned. Air-con not working...

2) 1992 Black MR2 GT Turbo T-bar, 49k miles, completely standard. Fresh import from japan...

Both cars about the same price.

Any opinions please!!!

Well I would lean towards the 1994 car if its a rev 3, otherwise the 1992 car

Yes the 1994 is Rev 3.

The only problem is that i'm "toys" guy... I had really wanted the toys that come on the GT spec car...

Can't have everything i guess :)

some GTS's do come with factory fitted options...

Mine's got climate control on top of air con.

No leather though :(
No folding mirrors :(
No ABS :(
No steering fog lights - not too fussed about them tbh
No active sub - most people tend to upgrade their speakers / stereo anyway.

Both cars are a good colour & T-bar, so consider instead:

rev2 vs. rev3 car - this has been covered to death on here, but basically more bh/p, most rev3's came with a LSD, metal head gasket and the all important one piece spoiler, but both car's have the same brakes & wheels, and I think Bilstien suspension (standing ready to be corrected)

Also, age vs. condition - generally you'd think the newer the car, the better, but we're talking a 10 yr old car versus a 12 year old car - not exactly a lot in it.

Some say a car's life in Japan will have been easier than life in UK, so that could count towards the 1992 car if the 1994 car's been in the UK for a few winters now. Only my opinion however, by no means a fact.

What's the mileage on the 1994 car? Is anyone on here suspicious why it's had it's turbo reconditioned?

The 1992 car shouldn't be needing any major work at 49,000kms, but the cam belt might be getting a bit tired, and should be renewed sooner rather than later IMO.

I think a visual inspection & test drive is your next step, or some type of AA check if you can stretch to it for the both of them.

Hope this helps

For a similar price and similar condition go for the rev 3. I bought a very nice rev 2 and love it, but wish it had been a 3!!!

Yeah, I'd do this too! Hang fire till you get the car you really want! Then you're 100% happy

Go for the first option. The important parts of the car have been taken care of, and any toys missing from it can be added later on when you get the time or money.

You might end up with ABS and a few other goodies with the GT-S anyway.

Same spec as im looking for. Very difficult to find one tho. I'd be double checking the recon'd turbo. Its either high mileage or abused a.f. to have a turbo recon'd i would've thought.

............ and for that reason, neither are what you want so why not hold out?

The '94 sounds dodgy, is a rev 3 so you get options but is GT-S so you're not getting everything you want.

The '92 sounds like a good motor but is rev 2 so you are not getting the benefits of a rev 3 in terms of performance and mechanical advances, safety features..... not that the rev 2 is a bad car of course!! :P

If you get either, you know you will keep thinking about that 'other' car you could of had, that you seem to want!!

If you do go for 1, get the '92, the low mileage goes a long way.

That's my opinion :)

Thanks for all the comments. I think that i'm close to a decision - just got to get my finances in order. The idea of waiting for a rev 3 GT tbar seems to be a bit of a no-goer really as the two cars that i'm looking at now are at the top end of my budget.

Don't write the GT-S off, though - they may lack the toys of the GT, but are usually lighter because of this.

Having a T-Bar roof sounds romantic (summer afternoon drives with the wind in your hair, etc, etc), but the realities of scuttle shake and leaks are a nightmare.

just out of curiosity what kind of price were these cars at?

p.s. if you cant find a black one, buy any other colour and respray it if the price allows it.

The cars are both up at £5500, it's really more than i originally wanted to pay (isn't that always the way!).

Well still thinking about it all anyway :)

Anybody give me a rough cost of a respray? THats something that i hadn't really considered...

£5,500!

For those specs you shouldn't be paying that much, £5k very tops more like £4,500!!

Well as much as i would like to pay less, the cars just aren't out there! I've been looking since the start of the year, and every car that i've been to look at up to now is crap!

Yep - know what you mean. I had to wait months for my black tubby to come along with the right spec, and even then it was a long drive to pick it up. Worth the wait, though, no matter how tempting it is to just go out and buy the closest you can find.

For your car Juicin', you'd possibly get £8-9k?? Rev 5 turbo with v low mileage......... Who knows, you could get more if the right person came along?

For a good '92 import and a dodgy '94 import I think £5K is about right. There are quite a few around so they are going for less. Yours is pretty rare on the market so would comand a premium.

That's what I think anyway.
