272 Cams "I'm a bit Slowww!

Post by mr2ash »

A jolly tuesday evening to you all,

Could someone please clear up what the difference is between 264 & 272 HKS cams in terms of how it effects the engine (or if there is another similar post please point me in that direction). I am aiming for a track set-up eventually when I finially get my a long awaited promotion, which would be best for my rev3 gts.

Thanks =D>

The aftermarket cams hold the valves open longer.

272's hold them open longer then 264's. With 272's you'll sacrifice mid range to gain top end performance.

Open longer = more air = more power basically.

I would stick with 264's. In fact I have

The 264's are fine for track.

p.s. go with piper cams rather then HKS.

They were designed specifically with the 3sgte in mind. Where as the HKS ones were designed for the n/a engine firstly.

Here you go mate,

I posted this in another thread recently.

May help you understand the basics :-k :?:

The camshaft is responsiable for controlling the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.

On the cam there are lobes (the parts that stick out) they are the part that opens and closes the valves. The camshaft that comes stock in the motor are designed to allow the valves to open and stay open according to the factory specification. Aftermarket cams can be designed to allow valves to stay open longer or open at different times then the stock camshaft will allow.

There's probably far more info than you can ever make sense of on this website. Dave Baker is regarded as something of a guru in the 205 tuning area so although he doesn't mention the 3SG(t)E specifically, there's a lot of good info on the site.

This page looks like a good place to start if you want to understand what difference cams can make.

Wow, excellent comments guys thanks. I couldn't find this post as it got moved from the general to mods, i thought the question had been deleted. Thanks for the info on piper, i will go for them. Mid-range is defo more important so the 264 will be purchased. I heard that cams are really different to fine properly. Any good advice on where to go to get them fitted.

Can add some vernier pulley's to time them up much more accurately and save some weight in the process!

timing pulleys are not only for fine adjustment though

these pulleys allow the powerband to be put back down...

so add big cams -> powerband rises to higher rpm
now add pulleys, you can broaden that band back to midrange while also retaining that power in higher rpm...

tuning is everything when adding cams, tuning by fuel AND timing!

Still learning cosmos, but thanks. You could say it only takes a bit of common sense to see the BIG link buttons and you would be right
