Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
drove an mr2 turbo today without power steering and i have to say, it was a major pain in the @ss. 3 point turns took minutes, corners had to be taken slowly, generally all types of driving other than in a straight line was a bit of a chore.
is there any one out there who prefers not having power steering on their mr2?
was fine on the MK1 as it was light and you could feel exactly what the car was doing but parking was so annoying! especially as i had a smaller momo wheel.
wouldn't dare drive my MKII without the power steering, it stills a bit of feel but not much i find and actually quite like it, it's not to light and not to heavy on the steering. i don't think i'd try driving the car without power steering as my steering wheel in my turbo is a 320mm Momo!
Shaf, did this MR2 have power steering but it was just broke? or was it a Non-power steering model?
Ask Craig what he thinks as his doesn't have P/S either.
Has the TRD arrived yet?
I never used to like it - having grown up on cars without power steering, but tend to prefer it now.
My mate has a 1991 MR2 GT which I parked for him the other day, and I was amazed at the difference in feel in a non PS MR2 compared to my MR2 tubbies.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Depends how good the system is.
If it loads up correctly in relation to speed it can be ok, but on a sporty car, i prefer to do without. Then again, I'm just strange like that.

I generally loathe power steering. This IMO is one of the tubbies biggest downfall as it robs you of any feel.
For a barge its fine, but i am very glad my MK1 doesn't have it.

i think the model just was the non-power steering version...... it had a 320mm steering wheel too which didnt make it easier.

Your Damn right Lauren!!
Loads more feel through the car without it! I have 18" wheels, lowered 40 mm and steering is a b1tch when parking but I love it

i prefer to park the bu88er quick whilst i dash in an out of the bank. the heavy steering doesnt make for a quick getaway at all
