New insurance quote

Post by The Morris »

Was going to look round this year as im paying £900, but just got my new quote. 5 years no claim 29 years old £520.80 + no claim protection £89.25 + Legal protection £17.85 = £627.90. its come down £21 per month thats £250, well happy with that. Ive claimed for wheels and exhaust, left out the rest. Dont think ill bother looking around now, even though im sure some of you are cheaper. Its just a lot of hassle to change insurance companies.

Good price, but are you sure you don't want to declare all your mods? It could be the start of a lot of pain, very expensive pain, if you have to make a claim. Small price to pay now, for a potentially big price later.

Yes, I have. If you have your car assessed by the insurance company as to cost of repairs/whether it's a right off, it will be inspected, and they're not fools. I have a mate who does it and he regularly trawls car bulletin boards and car magazines so he knows what he's looking for, and he is not alone.

But thats not really the point. It can happen, it does happen and if it did, your insurance would/could be null and void. Then, depending on the severity of the accident, Mr Plod could get involved, and then we have the whole gammit of driving without insurance etc etc etc.

Is it a risk that you really want to take?

i understand that if i have a big crash they will take a look, but not for the odd knock. At the end of the day, if i wrote it off how much would they give me £3000 tops.

that's not the point I'm trying to make. if you have a crash and, god forbid, someone is seriously injured and your car is inspected, you possibly would have no insurance and thats when it can get very very nasty.

It's just not worth the risk in my opinion. declaring all your mods is not automatically going to ramp up your premium. Talk to a specialist broker, but just don't try and beat the system by falsely declaring fewer mods than you have.

If you can't afford the insurance, don't do the mods, it's as simple as that.

I have a couple of friends that work for insurance companies and they tell me that if a car has a rep for being mod'd they tend to check them out if they're involved in an incident.

I'd have to agree though, give them a list of all your mods and pay the price, there are a number who will just record what you have without putting up your premium. Those that do you can always phone around and play the give me a lower quote game, worked for me and I'm only paying £370 fully comp and protected this year. :)

There are enough wasters on the road without insurance these days, would be bad form if you had yours cancelled due to a breach of the small print.

Good price mate but when i had my crash in my astra i had not declared the alloy wheels i had put on it. This was the only mod i had put on and the ins company refused to pay for the damage as they said it was the "non standard wheels" that caused my accident so i had to fork out 2k to get my car sorted out.

Very big price to pay as u never know what is round the next corner, my advice is declare everything you have put onto it as it will be best in long run.

Care to give us a clue?

I am currently shopping around and the cheapest I can get at the moment is £675 for a N/A import (UK spec). Admittedly, this does include breakdown and legal and an 8 year protected NCD but still ...

I am sure I can get it lower than that ...

Cheers.

Ah thanks, I just stumbled across them after a recommendation in another thread!

They beat my renewal quote by almost £200 but that's forfeiting my breakdown cover which I am sure can be obtained cheaper than privileges offering at £103!

One concern though, they say in the small print, the car must not be modded in any way. Mine has after market side skirts (nothing too flash) but there doesn't seem to be anywhere I am able to declare this. Should I be concerned as this minor detail could potentially invalidate my insurance? I guess they are only a different version of the original side mouldings after all?

I was also amazed to learn that he fact the car is an import has no bearing on the premium (checked with customer services).

Seems a good bet so far ...

Just to answer my own posting for the benefit of anybody else following this thread, side skirts do <b>not</b> affect the premium through privilege - I have just confirmed this with customer services.

Excellent stuff all round! By far the cheapest I have had quoted ...
