EDIT bought it..PICS of my new red SC conversion...PG4

Post by Donna MR2 »

Hi guy, first post, i have admired the Mk1's for a while now and a nice one has come up locally.

It may have been someone on here originally that sold it as it looks like it have really been looked after.

Its a red supercharged model and looks really immaculate, the paint is really fresh and the interior is really clean too.

Ive still to test drive etc and really get a good look, there are piles of reciepts for it.

The price its going in the autotrade for is £3500 ono.

But i was asking about it before and he said £2800.

Its really super clean, ive never seen one as good as this before so my question is should i buy this for £2800 or will i find other supercharged ones as mint as this one for the same or less?

The guy told me he paid £4000 ish on ebay for it last year?

I will get more details of it later today inc millege etc as i know this will affect price.

As im new to the MR2 scene i just wanted to ask the experts. :D

Thanks Guys 8)

Hi Donna & welcome to IMOC & welcome to the world of the MK1 =D> . Firstly Superchargers are fairly rare in the U.K as they were never sold here through Toyota dealerships, so choice is always limited, £2800 will get you a decent car & is around the right price, BUT do make sure that it is a genuine supercharger & not a conversion as this will affect the price greatly, the easiest way to do this is to pop the front bonnet & look on the bulkhead, just below the screen on the drivers side there will be a series of number & letters, firstly make sure the area around the serial numbers look like they have always been there & not stamped over or altered in any way, then look at the first part of the serial code, if it says" JT1C" then this is a conversion as all euro cars had this prefix at the start of the code, if however it starts "AW11" then this is right for a supercharger but only if you can satisfy yourself that its never been altered. You need to ask a few questions though, Why is the seller prepared to drop £1200 on a car he only bought a year ago ? would you drop that much for something you only purchased a year ago ?, does the car have any problems that need sorting ? is there any service history with the car & has it been well maintained & by who & why was it resprayed ( as far as i know, superchargers never came in red from the factory, but im willing to be corrected on this  ) was it due to rust or a collision ? and an HPI check will be a big help here, £2800 is a lot of money to spend without seeking a few common sense answers first. If instinct tells you something is not right, then walk away, your fist instinct is nearly always the right one & dont let your heart rule you head when looking at these cars, they look fantastic from any angle & they are very photogenic. also update your profile & let us know where in the country you are, im sure somone knowledgable who lives near you may be able to view the car with you. Just one more piece of advice which im sure you already know, make sure you go along with someone or at least let somone know where your looking at this car, there are lots of crazy weirdo's out there. good luck & let us know how you get on, cheers, Jinxy

I read this advert somewhere, not even sure if it was on here? Is it the Burgundy one Amir Hashmi (sp?) owns? It seems to be up for sale twice a year tbh........

red sc cars are very scarce burgundy metalic are as well
it is possable that at 4k the seller over paid last year
where are you located maybe someone locally can come and give you a second opinion
fill in you location in your profile this is always a big help!
there are no hard and fast rules to pricing on these cars some sell very high some quite low one day there seem to be bargains next the prices are up again it just hapens that way
didn't wayne just take a loss on an SC he bought recently?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies,

i went to have a quick look today as it at my local mechanics as its his nephews.

Its code is the ic1 (or something like that) not the proper original SC one.

Its in really great condition, its had a respray a year or two ago,

Its in Central Scotland and it has a pile of receipts for new panels etc,

I couldnt test drive it as the the car had no petrol left but it is really nice, the original sppedo is there to show the millege before the supercharger one was fitted too.

Its done 136000 and seems to have plenty history.

The reg is IOX and a few numbers incase any one remembers is as the boy went down south to collect it and there are loads of MR2 owners club receipts for various bits.

Its a 1986 car.

It has an after market exhaust and air filer from what i can see and the engine says supercharger on it.

Does anyone have any idea how fast this will be?

Thanks

Hi Donna, so its not an original SC then  , JT1C would have been the start of the code by the way. in that case £2800 is quite a bit of money for a conversion. Has the conversion been done properly ? & by the sounds of it they havnt changed the speedo over to the propper SC one either #-o , does it have any under body issues ? at 136,000 miles i'd expect it to have been repaired in all the ususal places. At the end of the day its always your call, but £2800...... OUCH!, cheers, Jinxy
P.S just because it say " supercharger" on the cam covers, dont assume its a supercharger, cam covers can easily be swapped & to a MK1 novice first driving one of these cars....you probably wouldnt tell the difference.

It has the SC speedo, i just ment the origianl speedo is also with the car. :D
Its had many new panels and also a full respray, there is a bundle of receipts, its really tidy, its hard to pick fault tbh especially since its 20 years old

Maybe its worth seeing whether it can be arranged to be view on a four poster via an inependant garage or perhaps get the AA to give it the once over? £2800 is a very keen price - whether its a conversion or not, obvious concerns regarding the underneath if its spent its entire life in the UK - but either way you could not but a good mk1 and the necessary bits plus labour to convert a UK car to supercharger spec, so IMO its worth getting an independant second opnion

If you really want a proper sc ,go for an original, spend ,maybe £500 more and you could get one but as said on here there aren't many about.
I'm no expert but sometimes an sc engine is fitted into an na but generally the bodywork will not be as good.
You asked about power.A standard na mk1 is about 124bhp.A standard sc is about 145bhp,get an oversize pully fitted and it goes upto about 170-175 bhp.
My car has the big pulley fitted and i am well pleased with it powerwise!
Time wise 0-60 a standard na is possibly about 7.5-7.9 secs.A standard sc is about 6.5-7 secs
An sc with the big pulley fitted, should be 5.5-6 secs but obviously this depends on which exhaust and set up you have, not bad for an 80's car!
Hopefully i'm not being over optimistic, otherwise i will get slated.
These are mainly guesstimates,i don't know fror certain

Yes I know that one too. It sold for £2900 and then £2700 (IIRC) a few months back (but it didnt meet the reserve, which was later stated to be £3000). Bloke accused people of timewasting and then took it off

Looked like a nice conversion to me, I think the guy just misjudged the fact that 90% of potential buyers lived hundreds of miles away and wouldnt travel that far just to look at a car that they may not even bid on.

The travel distance is a particular problem in rural areas - if selling somethign of national appeal. Ebay has made this worse as it seems more people take note of whats for sale online (convience, laziness  ), rendering more local selling forums useless - potentially local papers can harvest some really good finds, particulary with older generations or non-computer users (very few I would guess). Also if at the end of the day potential buyers cannot be bothered in viewing, their level of interest must be fairly low.
