Hi,
I'm new here so I don't know if you all know each other in real-life or something but anyway...
It occurs to me that it'd be handy if there was some way of finding site members by location. Might help arrange meets etc.
The nicest way would be a map where each member could put a pin. That way you could see the pins of anybody in the desired area.
I've seen similar things done on other websites so I know it's possible.
I have added myself to the FRAPPR page. Looking at it - is this something that could be incorporated into the IMOC site - the map with the pins and then it could be based on location or similar from within the member profile????

That was something I thought of as I placed my person pin within my locale but not too close. I don't think anyone really wants my Black Mk1a Rust Bucket Money Pit That Much Though!!!
I personally thought it was a great idea. I really don't think a pin will result in someone nicking your car! For example my pin is in Derby, which was the closest place I could pick. I actually live 10 miles away. Someone would have to be mega keen to find it. Anyway that's my excuse for keeping it scruffy, no-one will want to nick it!

But if you've put your location into your IMOC forum profile everyone can see where you live anyway. Or at least, to the same degree of fidelity that that map shows.
I think it's a good idea and have added myself. Seems to be a bit of an MR2 exclusion zone around Brighton at the moment though!
Well I am in worthing nearly every weekend, and often go to brighton, mostly shopping mind, and not mine either! So not too far from brighton! cheers Mike
I agree with Tom on this one. You don't need to be mega-exact where you put your location pin on Frapper!
The Frapper thing is a great idea IMO.

It always amuses me how paranoid people on the internet can get about locations being 'given away'
vBulletin do a 'world map' plugin that plots member locations automatically based on IP (so it's not too accurate but gives a general idea) - I think it can be changed to show who is actually online or who has been online: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=109819
I presume there will be a similar hack available for phpBB but in the meantime you can see the vB one here: http://www.onlinewarfare.net/forum/online.php?
The Frappr works OK if people populate it, very handy for finding local members, arranging meets in locations suitable for the majority and just for being nosey

Indeed - like similar paranoia about people showing their number plates online: "Oh! Someone could hack the DVLA database and find out where my car is".
The IP --> map thing is a great idea, but my (fixed) IP at home will show up as Canary Wharf in London rather than my humble abode in Leicester.

I've always thought that blocking your numberplate out when posting pictures was more a case of trying to reduce the chance of your plate being copied and used on another similar car belonging to someone else (e.g. for them to go on a speeding spree and get your plate captured on all those cameras). Admittedly anyone could "steal" your numberplate if they see your car out and about but actually posting it on the web means a lot more people can see it and they don't even have to leave their house!

Well, I don't disagree with your logic here at all, and there certainly is the possibility that this could happen.
Someone with a white Mk2 MR2 could go to all the trouble of scouring the net for my car/plate, getting a plate made up, then go on a speeding spree. Of course, the car would also have to have the same skirts/spats/spoiler/wheels/exhaust/stickers/lights as mine!
There's more chance of my credit card being cloned, methinks.
