is knocking related to brake problems??

Post by phill_mr2GTS »

i recently bought my mk rev 2 turbo and it had a binding front brake.
took it apart and found the lower piston to be siezed so replaced with recon caliper.no sticking now but when i brake hard it makes a loud grindin sound like the wheel is possibly locking up even tho i got ABS,the noise is defo abnormal.i also have a knocking noise coming from the same side. checked drop links, top mounts, think ARB bushes mite be perished ,does any1 think the brake problem might be related to the knocking?
any advice welcome cus im worried the brake might fail,
DONT WANA DIE guys :? :? :?

If your new caliper is a reconditioned unit, and it and the caliper mounting bracket are secured as they should be, and your pads/discs are in good order, then i can't see how they can be the cause of your knocking.

do you have any idea what could be causing the brakes to grind lock up???i cant really tell exactly what they are doin unless i watch the car braking i suppose.i guess i need to employ the help of a family member to brake hard. by the way pete what is the process for returning my old caliper to you as i purchased the recon from you?
cheers phill

I'm no expert but...

If your wheel is locking up and you've got ABS then could you have knocked/damaged the ABS sensor or line when putting your new caliper on?
TBH though I doubt your wheel is locking up, I'd expect tyre screech and not a grinding noise.

Something got between your pads & discs?
What state are your anti-squeel shims? Something got onto the back of the shims?

no shims are good, pads and discs seem ok everything is tight bolt wise.yeh i agree the tyre would screech i spose.would damaged ball joints let the hub assembly move under heavy braking???just wondering if this might cause the grinding,
again any advice welcome
cheers

Nope your balljoint would have to be totally broke to allow that sort of movement. Have you checked your dustsheild hasn't been lent on when changing caliper??

the dust shield is ok. i feel it may be ABS related as it only happens when i brake heavily i.e when the ABS is supposed to work and /or is not working.

Easy on the Bumping fellah :)

The caliper - did you replace the rubber seal on the lower guide pin? If you didn't, I found on my Rev2 that the pin would 'rattle' inside the guide - that could be your noise.

Grinding - I'd take the wheel off and spin the brake disk and see if anything could be touching.

You've not got a bad wheel bearing ..?

I had a grinding noise coming from the right front wheel under braking. I changed both front discs and pads, still did it. Changed both rear discs and pads just in case, still did it. Also checked all calipers to see if they were sticking and they weren't. The only thing left was front wheel bearings, which had no play in them, but changed them anyway and that solved it. I don't know if it was the bearings themselves, or just something not seated properly in the hub assembly... :-k
As for the knocking, I also have it, and curing the grinding under braking didn't make it go away.
