Ticky noise

Post by dawolf »

I'm not sure if this has always been there but I've been noticing a feint but rapid ticking kind of sound from the engine bay, I can hear it in my right ear but not my left so must be on the right side of the engine. Can't seem to work out what it is unless it's wind noise through the vent. I've tried revving the engine stationary and it sounds okay.
Any ideas?

I have the same with mine mate - Rev2 N/A with 99000 on the clock - but it was doing it at 82000 when i bought it.

I dont think its an unhealthy noise but my ears pick up on anything that i dont think should be there and it bugs the hell outta me.

Maybe tappets???

It sounds like valve noise, mine is a bit 'tapety' at idle but it goes once the engine has warmed up.

Could be, mine is a bit tappety when idling from cold. Need to give it an oil change soon.

I had a similar noise, it was the alternator belt a bit loose (I think causing the pulleys to rattle slightly). Its on the right hand side of the engine bay.

Noises like this are common in the cold, get your belt tightened/renewed and see if its better.

Aah thats a good point Leeroy - thats something i havent checked for a while. I must admit - the rate at which the pulleys go round i wouldnt be surprised.

Ticking...? Does it happen with the engine off? If so, its your watch. Swap from your right hand wrist to your left hand...

now then, this may sound way off, but check your manifold studs are tight enough, escaping gas would make a tappity sound which most mistake for worn valves etc.

Worth a look!

does it make the noise when the engine is off, but ignition on?

If so, could be injectors. Mine make a ticking noise.

Yup, my old NA did exactly this. Most noticeable when driving alongside a wall or high hedge.

What exactly is the noise you are getting?

I have a noise that is a high pitch tick/click that increases in occurence as speed increases, it seems to sound with every revolution of the wheels and so seems like a driveshaft issue.......??????

It is also most noticeable when driving past a wall with the tbars off/window down, infact I can't hear it unless in this situation.
