Infinity Kappa without amplifier...

Post by MegatronUK »

May just stretch my budget to the Kappa 42.5i instead of Reference 4012i... however they are rated at 50w nominal rms, 150w peak. My head unit is capable of 24.5w rms per channel... should they run ok on the headunit itself?

Fine and dandy. Thats quite a good "safe" gap. AFAIK you want to have at least 30% more than you are going to be running through them.

im sure i will be corrected if im wrong, but i was led to believe that rms figures shoud be as close a match as possible on the source and the speaker to acheive optimal sound results. :-k
maybe ive been told wrong though, but have utilised this theory with my own setup with pleasing results, jim

Depends on the headunit aswell, if it has a mosfet amp etc. My alpine has a mosfet 4x60w output n sounds great with the infinity kappa 4" and 3.5"

Head unit has something like mosfet 4x45W plastered along the front... but real figures in the manual (once you decrypt the japanese lettering) give it as 24wrms.

TBH, I'm thinking about just going with the 4012's as they're closer to the ouput rating of the headunit (35wrms) and a tenner cheaper (59.99). I'm happy with the Reference kit in the Supra so I guess I can't go far wrong if I keep it all the same.

If I could find some I would! Cheap as chips on ebay via the US, but none of 'em will ship internationally. craraudiosecurity.com is the cheapest I've found so far.

Really depends on the head unit. My old Sony MDX6500 (or something like that) had roughly the same rated power as my Nakamichi CD400, but the Sony couldn't drive the speakers loud enough without distortion. With the Nak CD400 I can turn it up loud enough for motorway listening without any problems.

Try it and see..... at the very least they'll be tons better than the original speakers.

Jon
