Another tyre thread, some expert advice please.

Since having my car tuned, i cannot get any power down, I have decent tread, but the last time I had tyres fitted I couldnt get the sizes I wanted, and instead of waiting got ones too small really.

Im running 215/40/17 on the rear and 205/40/17 on the front.

I need some decent grip, i was think about 245 or 255 on the rear, if they fit on my rims, but was unsure if id have to change the front to keep some kind of proportion for handling etc?

Any advice appriciated as tyres etc arent my strong point!

You definitely need more meat all around. I'd stick your rears on the front and slide into some 235/40 or 245/40 for the rear (if it's an 8" width wheel).

Wait till spring though. The wider your tyres are in this weather the more like ski's they become.

Your rears are deff too small... standard is 225 @ the rear!!!!

I would go for 235's at the back (maybe 245's) You could probably go larger but it depends if you just want straight line grip or to keep the handling of the car!

I've been running 215 40 17's front and 245 35 17's rear,for a year now and find they offer a great level of handling and grip.The toyo's(front) and Falkens (rear) are getting pretty worn so have just orderd some Eagle F1's all round,hope they are as good as people say [-o<

Graeme - don't forget the role your Shocks also play in getting power down on uneven road surfaces.

On tyres, its the torque you're transferring to the road. With 300ft/lbs of torque on my old Rev2 (~300bhp) and 225/50R15 tyres both the S-03 and F1 would handle the power in the dry no problem.

On a damp road, S-03s would take full boost in 2nd and stay hooked up, the F1s would slip if the damp road surface was smooth

Ben: Thanks for the reply, im running koni adjustables all round with h&r lowering springs, polyurathane bushes and custom droplinks from sbits.

I wonder if any adjustaments could help out, im not too clued up on suspension setting up etc!

mate, you need to find out the width of the wheel, otherwise everyone spouting off tyre sizes is no use unless you no exactly what you are running......

Cheers for that info, I'm running cack Nankangs on the rear atm (225/50/16) and am having real probs with my 282lb of torque with em so that helps me decide on next tyre

if your talking about the rear then 245/35 is ok, keeps the same rolling radius, i dout a 45 would actually fit in the arch without rubbing......

All the money you have spent is wasted if you can't get the power down on the road.

Moral: Do not skimp on tyres.

As you know I'm running 18s with Eagle F1s rear and Yokohama Paradas front.

In the new year I'm replacing F1s with Paradas----I rate them that highly.

Agree with Jim here, You need to take a rear wheel off to see if it has the width stamped on the back of it. What rims do you have i might know the width if it's something i've come across before

If it's 7x17 then 235/40 is the biggest your gonna be able to go and your speedo reading will be "slightly" out due to the increased rolling radius

If 8x17 then get some 245/35's on there They are a bit dearer than a 235/40 but it's the only size available (other then a 215/40) that offers a near perfect rolling radius to the stock 15's

If 7.5x17 it's your call. 245/35 aren't recomended for a 7.5j rim but myself and others have been running this set-up for a while no hiccups.

nightSpirit has 380bhp@Hubs and he's running 245/35 Toyo's on 7.5x17 rims and IIRC he said they we're coping well with the power

You get what you pay for with tyres, Cheap = Cheap and keep your 215's for the front for when the 205's run out

Do you know the offset of your rims? I have 7.5x17 et35 with 245/35's fitted, Car is lowered 50mm on coilovers and is very close, I'm not too sure i would get away with a 35 offset 8j wheel on mine without modifying the arch or getting the car raised slightly

Had nothing but good feedback off customers regarding the Paradas too, Carl in work has them on his STi 8 though and he says they're Crapola in the wet

Thewheels are 17 inch integral A2, think they are quite popular as ive seen them on a good few cars.

Im not going to skimp on tyres, ill pay the price, just want to get a good tyre and the right size first time.

Nightspirits car was mentioned at thor as my power was very close to theres, ive never seen this person, or company? on the board, i do put out alot more torque tho, im holding over 300ft/lbs for roughly 1200rpm which whould be great fun if i can keep it down!

No worries Nangkangs with that much torque .... .... I bet thats a handfull in the wet!

I did use S-03s for a long while, but actually went back to F1 GSD-2s which had less grip but much more feedback, especially in the wet - you could better feel when the limit of grip was reached. The S-03s had amazing wet grip, it was just impossible to judge when that limit was reached.

361bhp on yours - that's not a bad figure at all, it must be making decent torque figures at the top end too.
