Anybody running a MK1 NA with enigine mods?

Post by firstmk1 »

I read alot of posts about folk wanting to modify their 4AGE enigines but has anyone actually done it yet?

I'm looking to have some (would you call them serious Peter?) changes made and would like to talk to others about their experience.

Ian

PS Feel free to talk about it Mr G

133BHP but without wanting to start a whole debate with no end and no gain I recon the rollers were about 10hp down most standard MK1's produced 111BHP on the day when they should have been 120ish so Matt's 133BHP probably 143ish which is about tops for a 4age without cam and ecu mods, which he hadn't yet done. so there is another big jump to go maybe 20 or so more HP  of course this is just top end power I haven't yet seen the printouts so there maybe a healthy gain in the midrange where you spend most time, making it as I've heard a quick car   oh yeah we also saw one car run 111BHP standard and then do 146BHP with NO2 injection a big jump with the added benefit of just using it when you feel like it and running standard for trips to the shops :!: :!:

Do we know what's been done to that car?

I'll have to get mine on a dyno when the work has been done. Does anyone have any experience of a dyno near Huddersfield?

you will need to PM MrDix for spec. Look out for next MK1 RR day to give you a good comparison running on your own doesn't give you the full story TBH

Sounds like a good plan if a little nerve racking. [-o<

Look at this recent thread http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24098 ..since any serious mods will involve cams, plus club 4ag has a lot of info on this engine...

I've read all about what people want to do and how to do it but I've not found anyone who runs a car with any of these mods. I ask because I'd like the opinion of someone with ownership experience rather than just info from a web site.

Basically I would like to know what a tuned car is like to live with.

The car I bought from David Hawkes (ex Granville Williams race car etc), had a Raw engineering trac pack 2 engine fitted, which involved some headwork, 288 inlet 272 exhaust cams with 8.8mm of lift a CR rise to 11:1 and twin dellorto 45's gave 169bhp. It was a fully lightenend and balanced engine so could rev to 8500 all day long and the power kept going up.

Good engine but no torque below about 4500 rpm so a complete pig to drive on the road. With Throttle bodies (to give it better low speed driveablity and some more low end torque), bigger inlet valves, more headwork and 304/288 10.4mm cams it'd be up at around 190bhp and a lot more driveable.

I know a guy with a corolla gt that runs in the toyo mod prod series with a 230bhp 4AGE engine, but that is a very special bit fo kit, essentially a formula atlantic engine which revs to 11000 rpm. Awesome on track but no change from 20grand, and needs an engine build once or twice a year (300miles)

The 288/272 cam combo some mild headwork a set of throttle bodies and a standalone will make for a nice tractable fast road / track engine and will outrun most things on a trackday, but most of the big gains are made at higher revs so to get big power you have to spend real money on steel cranks, high CR pistons, good rods and a lot of good engine builders time.

The cheap route to power will always be a GZE engine with a big pulley and maybe some very mild cams 264/256, or a turbo'd gze lump which could give 250bhp and still be quite driveable. The GZE does give a different kind fo drive though as its less revy than a 4AGE due to all the extra crank load and rotating inertia.

That all sounds promising. I've got a set of 288 cams and throttle bodies to go on mine so we'll see what happens. The man with the task of fitting the bits is comfident and I have every faith in him.

i've got 272´ cams on mine with 8.3 lift, some basic head work, hks induction system/filter and a magnex exhaust, though no balancing. It{s very driveable on the road, and sounds pretty good though it was much better with the Janspeed I had before. It produces 142Bhp at the wheels, equivalent to 160-165 at the Flywheel with more to come after i{ve had the Unichip installed. All in all i{m pretty happy with the result.
