Decat & Mongoose Fitting... time taken: 2h 37m

Post by Import »

I fitted my Decat and Mongoose Exhaust System today, on my REV3 Turbo.

Started out and clicked the stopwatch at 1pm!

With access of a four-poster ramp, and plenty of tools, we'd started her back up again at 3:37pm this afternoon :)

Well happy with how it sounds, and it's just evil on the road!

Really happy with how it went, with only having 1 dodgy bolt which was turbo - elbow (where the aircon pipes get in the way)

Got plenty of photos along the way which I'll upload in a wee while!

Thanks for all the pointers/ advice people on here gave me!

Some photos of todays progress

Once turbo heatshield & cross bar/ strut brace were removed, lambda was next

Under car shot with exhaust still on

Cat removed, cast elbow still on (these weigh loads)

Under car shot with no exhaust on

Decat & elbow setup removed

Turbo, for people wanting to do this soon, the lower stud shown here needs to be extracted/ removed
Image

This is why, upper gasket is the old turbo/ cat gasket, lower is the new turbo/ decat gasket, note one less stud hole
Image

New decat on, and lambda in (lambda heatshield now removed though)

New exhaust system on

Good going fella, Wish mine had gone as smooth - Those CATs aren't light are they

And every bloody elbow-cat bolt snapped on mine

Wow, that's pretty fast going! Just installing a downpipe took much longer on mine (but then again, I had to do it lying under the car, PITA job). Gonna fit a Mongoose this Saturday \:D/

fair play mate, just a quick question..... how did you get the std centre section of the exhaust off without taking the drive shaft out? I spent ages trying to get it out and after nearly taking my life due to sheer frustration my 'ol best mate mr angle grinder came to the rescue....... needless to say 2 mins later the std exhaust was no more!!

You gotta love the grumble of the decat and mongoose combination. I'm seriously considering going this way after I finish my build. Been watching some of my video footage and the sound brings back soooo many good memories...

Feels much better Karl! Really agressive on the road.

Just this minute won a AutoGauge Smoke Boost gauge so I can see what I'm running.

I paid £490 for the de-cat and mongoose system complete, and had it collected.

Really worth the money in my opinion, an excellent fit too - just fit straight on!

did you use ramps to fit it - whould it be a buger to fit using a jack??

Whats the sound difference?

I had access to a 4-poster ramps, but I can't see it being too much of a PITA if your on jacks, just get the axel stands as high as possible.

Alot of the work is done via the top anyway, so you end up getting leg ache from hanging over the bay so much!

Really really deep grumble sound now, but not too loud (thankfully) as I go on UK tracks, so has to be under 98dB's

I'll get a pic for you now mate, they are 2x 3.5" round (about 1" bigger than standard)

Just ordered a pair of new number plates too, so the rear one will fit perfect soon, and the front is 3/4 size :)

With a new system like that you want to cut the back grill off,and show that polished stainless steel off.

I was going to fold up the black grill but the boxes aren't exactly central, so my look a little out of place?

Any more opinions?
