My 1st mr2!

Post by johnnyb »

Thought I'd better make my first post in here and introduce myself.

Well, I've owned my mk1 for just over a week and the spending has already started, just getting a bit of dodgy paint rectified and that should be all the bodywork it needs, no rust whatsoever.

The main reason I've bought the mr2 is so I can start doing airfield days/trackdays again. Up until July this year i had a Mk1 Escort which I threw around the airfields. I sold it and then shortly afterwards realised I needed my trackday fix so started a search for an affordable rwd car. After considering and dismissing quite a few cars I just happened to pull up next to an mr2 at some traffic lights, hmmm, maybe...

After a few weeks searching the Autotrader and Ebay I made the purchase :P . No pictures yet but I'll try to take a few at the weekend. I'm really looking forward to getting it on track and learning about the handling although my other car is also mid engined so I know all about the "different" characteristics O:)

I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. The site with all my photos on is down at the moment although it should be back up tomorrow.

The bodyshop phoned earlier to say the mr2 is ready to be picked up =D>

Well I've had the car back from the bodyshop 2 days and what happens? A doddery old fart pulled out of a side street directly into my path. I jumped onto the brakes but the wheels locked up and I slid into the side of his car. Luckily not too much damage to the mr2, just a couple of small dents and the bumper and wing are pretty scratched.

After first accusing me of speeding  he then admitted he hadn't seen me when a couple of pedestrians walked up and offered to be witnesses for me. He's now agreed to pay for the damage, shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred £. A few pics of the car below and one of the damage although it doesn't show up too well on camera.

Oh well, back to the bodyshop.

Not yet but how can I resist an invite like that!

I've done quite a few airfield days in the past but in my mk1 Escort as I mentioned above. This could get me banned but I thought I'd post a pic....

Replica RS2000 with full RS running gear.

Fantastic car to throw around but I was getting a little concerned about damaging it as the price of the panels has gone through the roof so sold it

The one bonus is that I can now put my baby in the garage, no sorry not the mr2 but this...

Sorry for the non Toyota pics

Hi John, welcome to IMOC. The Mk1 is a great trackday car, I've got one for exactly that purpose too (although mine isn't as tidy as yours, even with your new go-faster stripes..)

There are plenty of people here who use a mk1 as a trackday car - I guess you've got to decide how serious you want to be and so how much money you're willing to spend.

Me, I'm at the budget end - but still get loads of fun from the car :)

I don't intend to spend too much, I made that mistake with the Escort. This is really going to be a budget track car.

Hopefully just upgrade the brake pads and fluid and erm that's about it :P

We'll see how it goes on the 1st track day and that could well go out of the window...
