[Mk2 ] Removing stereo

Post by k-ro »

got a jvc cd player installed, was there when i bought the car. I want to remove it but cant!, had the keys down the side, they lock but it wont budge. Single din units arent normally secured anywhere else apart from the clips to the cage are they?

Im not sure if this is correct for the UK cars but with my import the radio is not installed in a cage it is bolted to a pair of brackets which sit in the double din space.

This means to get the unit out you need to remove that part of the dash!!!
There are a couple of screws in the ash tray and one under the cig lighter on the underside of the dash, remove these and you can pull the centre console surround off (the sig lighter will still be wired, just pull out the plug).
You will be able to see the brackets, unscrew the brackets and the head unit will come out. You should find that the unit is screwed into the brackets, unscrew and you have got your head unit out.

I also had fun taking the cover for the tunnel off as a cd changer wire was routed through.

Anyway if your still unsure check out the online bgb.

Hope this helps.

The bracket is double din size but has the hole positions for both a single or double din unit to screw into it. There was a single din unit in mine with the blanking plate underneath. My car now has a big gap in the centre console as a have not replaced my radio yet. It looks pants ](*,)
