Installing amps and wiring

Post by rmglynn »

I've done a search and found a few threds about installing amps but i was after more detail if possible.

I've seen a few really nice jobs where amps are under the bonnet, over the spare wheel and hinged so you can still get @ it if you have a flat.

Any rough guide on how to make a nice one would be cool.

I just need to know where to run the wires, and how best to hide them (don't want it to look like some cowboy job lol)

I'd be interested to in any advice how to install stuff neatly - and still be able to access the spare wheel too, as my amp installation is still somewhat primitive

But I can help with routing wires. I put all mine through a large grommit right next to the clutch pedal. It's quite easy to access from both sides (one the front bonnet liner is out).

I pulled the bung back, stretched it wide enough to slide wires through, then pushed it back into position.

By removing the panel above the pedals (4 x screws) the wires can be routed up into the dash right behind the stereo.

Ian are u going on about the orange looking grommit to route the wires thru or sum other grommit. As im installing an amp at mo and the orange one is being used by the steering and i dont think i want to hinder that by putting wires thru. Is there another one that im missing. Cheers

Nice, any chance you could take pics of the build too (as well as "after", I need to smarten up my amp install under the bonnet and would like to see how other people build these things! e.g. is the board on legs or just clips to sides?)
Cheers :)

Sounds top! any chance on getting a rough guide on how to do the amp install under the bonet, would like to know where to hinge the MDF to and how you've hidden the wires (once the jobs done that is :D )

I really need help sorting out under the bonnet. I don't wanna start before i know what i am doing so a few pointers would be great if you don't mind. I am planning on fitting 1 1000w amp possibly also a 600w amp and a 10 disc changer. I doubt i will need another battery fitted in there but what are the chances of getting all this stuff in there, looking neat while still having access to the spare wheel? Should i buy a powercap too? Never had one but i'm curious.

Planning on running 2 10" subs, type-r components for the front and type-s for the rear. I'm either going to run 250 thru each sub and 250 through each component and use the head unit to power the rear speakers, or 500 thru each sub then 150 through the components and rear speakers.

Can't wait to get started. Hoping santa will be good to me ;)

Cheers

Stevenage (30 miles north of London) doubt I could help this side of Christmas anyway.

I'm hoping to be developing and producing the Hinging Amp Rack and making them available for sale very soon anyway, would you be interested? they are very easy to install.

Thanks

I'm hoping to start producing in the new year.

In the Picture you cannot see the the hinging Amp rack as it has an raised cover so it gives the Amps that flush look.

I'm not sure on pricing as of yet, maybe around £20-£30 for the complete kit ... watch this space!

sounds good! PM me when your in production.

Just wondering if you could recomend some 3 way component speakers @ a reasonable price (bout £150 - £200) and wheres best to get them.

Looking for ones that would pretty much be a straight swap with the standards, or as little work as possible. (last question i promise :D )

You'll sell those easily :)
I'm interested unless I build something in the interim!

If you can afford them everyone raves about focals but why not save yourself a few bob and go for the alpine type-r's for 110 squids. Thats what i'm going for. A lot of people say not to bother with the ones behind your head but i say spend the 70 quid and get the 4" alpine type-s and stick them in too. Run them all off an amp and it will sound great.

Bought 2 sub boxes from Neil_turbo that fit into the cubby holes behind the seats while allowing full tilt of the seats. They hold 10" subs so 2 alpine type-r's would fit nicely in there too ;) although i have 2 "ok" 10" subs at the moment that i'll use until i get the funds.

Cheers
