Best CD Tuner for under £200

Post by Rowland »

As above really.
I quite fancy a new stereo in the MR-S and at a £200 maximum budget.
I'm pretty out of touch with the i.c.e market but it must do the following.

Play CD/CD-R discs
Play MP3 files
Look pretty - Silver finish preferably!

In days of old I was always a big fan of Alpine and Sony head units.
Would this be a bad buy for instance from Halfords?

Any help, advice or potential super-wuper deals spotted, kindly welcomed.

Cheers!

:D

I've just fitted a Pioneer DEH-P1Y in mine, got it from a reliable chap in Hong Kong for just over £200. It's identical to the UK DEH-P80MP but cheaper :)

Give me a shout if you want his details, otherwise it's about £240 plus P&P here. Cracking unit, I'm really pleased with it.

Now THAT looks smart.
I've never really taken to Pioneer equipment for no particular reason. Does it sound as good as it looks?
Nice bit of colour coordination there Mike, you really love blue stuff!
4x60 watts and a remote control too!?

I might well be giving you a shout via email matey, will run it past the g/f as I've just spent a small fortune of late.

PS. You only bought it because it was blue didn't you?

Alpine CDA9831R CD Tuner
i have that once and it was bored, "its was what i think"
but if you like it may be you could give it a try, but i can tell you the function is very normal, and the interface is not so nice comapare to others ... :|
you could try the panasonic or sony or the kenwood. at the price of 200 you will still get nice stuff mate. :o

I can see the attraction with the completely black look when switched off.
Anything to deter the mindless criminal sorts!

I'm the same, I'd never really considered Pioneer until now but having spent a while looking at stuff that one really caught my eye - it's quite understated thanks to the central control joystick doing the job of loads of buttons. Sound is really good, loads of outputs, heaps of adjustability and stuff - I haven't got around to fitting my Focals as yet but even with 12 year old crap speakers it sounds good, I've heard one on a proper speaker setup and was blown away :)

You can't have blue dash lights and green stereo stuff ;) I've even taken my Origin b2 out because it lights up green - tragic!

4x60 or 4x40 via a switch on the bottom of the unit, remote control for no reason at all, motorised front panel blah blah blah...

I might well be giving you a shout via email matey, will run it past the g/f as I've just spent a small fortune of late.

Feel free sir, he can get all kinds of stuff so let me know what you fancy anyway and I'll get you a price :)

PS. You only bought it because it was blue didn't you?

I must admit that was a major selling point ;)

I am also thinking about getting a new headunit. I really want to control my iPOD from the headunit so its a throw up between:

The Alpine £245 with the ipod control box and leads.

The new pioneer ~£360 with ipod stuff but has bluetooth for mobile calls :)

The pioneer definately looks like the dogs but i think the alpine wins due to price

Not the best looking (at all TBH) I've always LURVED the Nakamichi Head Units, you are talking some serious money, however the sound quality is quite literally second to none, its a completely different league!

I've been looking around at headunits too, pretty much settled upon a Sony CDX-NC9950, has 2 preouts for front/rear and a dedicated sub preout, ideal for what I need and is a decent price. Also has iPod capability with an adapter.

I've only ever bought Alpine stuff in the passed, but at the moment this is going to be my next one.

Comes with Bluetooth , so it will interface with your phone and give you hands free =D>
