Lost my drag strip virginity at York today

Post by Andy Jones »

Hi All,

Well.....after owning and modding the 2 for the last 2 years i finally plucked up the courage to have a bash (more like Horrocks hounding me all last night and this morning to get my ar$e in gear)

Was having second thoughts yesterday due to having slightly bald tyres on the rear
Image

and 2 oil leaks (Rocker cover & Sump)

Anyway, Wasn't going too well for the first 6 runs, We (as in Horrocks) has decided my user name should be changed to "PANSY LAUNCHER" for letting the 2 community down with the complete lack of ability to get the car off the line properly  tried different revs and riding the clutch nothing seemed to be working :? and i was getting very wound up in the process #-o it did get slightly better towards the end though, Only lit up the tyres on the approach on the last 3 runs due to their condition and relying on them to get me home.

EXCUSE TIME  It was my first attempt at dragging EVER, I had bald tires, Everyone else said they were struggling for grip & I couldn't be bothered dropping the pressure in my rears (from 34psi) cause my hidden valve lock and adapter was in Horrocks boot in the Jag which was "a bit of a walk"

And it seems i have about as much respect for the gearbox as Mark Edwards 8)

Anyway, Here goes the story a little something like this (Cue Run DMC & Jason Nevins) I'm T82 BTW

Run 1 - Vs turbo'd 300bhp Nova (Had a 100 shot of NOS too but wasn't using it)
Image

Run 2 - Vs turbo'd Astra GSi
Image

Run 3 - Vs same turbo'd Nova
Image
Thought i did better but turns out he missed 3rd gear

Run 4 - Vs same Turbo'd Nova again
Image

Run 5 - Vs Saxo VTS
Image

Run 6 - Vs Astra (Engine not sure)
Image

Run 7 - Vs insane Hot-Rod
Image
http://media.putfile.com/GaylordPurpleVsMonster <--- VID HERE
Was in shock by this result especially after the start :D

Run 8 - Vs same insane Hot Rod
Image
He pushed in the queue for a rematch to get revenge and won this time BUT I GOT INTO THE 13's \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Just need to practice launching to sort out the rather Image 60 foot times but check out those 1/8 & 1/4 speeds for consistency if nothing else

And she got me back home with no probs whatsoever (bar slightly less oil)

nice one andy lad! was a bloody good day & now you been bitten by the 1/4 mile bug, it'll only get better & more expensive chasin them next tenths & about 30 of them should do!

could see you were enjoyin it more near end & gettin that bit of confidence to launch it with more than your 1500rpm efforts actually works!

nice work mr jones!

Cheeky bar-steward  Certainly have been bitten now :D and just to put you right, I can't remember when i tried the 1500rpm "effort" - 1st run was at 2500, 2nd at 3500 (this wasn't working) 3rd at 850rpm  pulling away from traffic light tactic (dropped cause this didn't work either )

Cheers Danny - Silly 17's will be off for next one - Thinking stock 15's and Toyo R888's

 Had it my head you ran a 14.2 matey and i knew i'd never hear the last of it from you

Downer to the day - My newly fitted DPII Pro (2 weeks on) is now dinted & scratched on the drivers side silencer from those fantastic country lanes leading to the strip  had 5 massive impacts at 30mph so car deffo getting raised.

Craig, you better get out to a drag strip real quick, I've gone ahead of you with my little Mk1 Supercharger! \:D/

Andy, noticed from the times that you were really struggling off the line. I was running 2.4s 60' all day until I gave it some on the burn out and managed one 2.2s 60' which generated my best time of 14.533.

I'm going to get my NOS system sorted over the winter and give it some at the first York event next year!

Anyone know what's wrong with the 1/4 mile table? :? . I was simply dieing to get rid of my 15.8s and did it straightaway last night, but it still showing that rubbish time :(

Mark, have you been to York? They have two launching areas on each lane. One is for slick-shod cars and is nice and grippy and the other is for us minions and is really slippy!

I tried all sorts to get out of the 2.4s, but could only manage a best of 2.2s. What should a Mk1 SC on road tyres be able to produce, do you know?

Tom, Was most likely the operator and not the equipment (Saves Horrocks a post)

As with yourself - I only decided to do burnouts on the last 3 runs and thats when i shaved off a couple of hundreds :-k should have done this earlier perhaps #-o

Never been there no. People say santa pod is slippery too, but i always get good times there.

Not sure what a sc should do tbh.

Yes it does depend on the weather of course. Can't get a forecast that far ahead yet. :?
