Auto search please.

Post by ENSMR2 »

To stop the countless reposts, duplicate posts etc etc. As no one seems to be using the search function before posting.

When posting a new post can it not be implicated that, before clicking on the submit tag you have to run a search 1st?

Something like you type in the subject of the post etc and then click on continue. Then it brings up a whole load of posts that are similar to what you are posting about? I think the DC had something similar.

Then you must read/have a quick look at the titles at least.

This might cut out a lot of duplicate posts.

Probably one of the better ideas and seems to be ignored.

What I am saying is it just throws up any similar matches for your perusal.

i.e.

Step one: Type in/select post subject or post title.

Click submit.

It throws up a list of similar posts via doing a keyword search.

Step 2: read them. Or go to step 3.

Step 3:If your answer is not ther click continue and type the post.

Simple.

Not hard. How many "BOV on rev 1/2" posts do we really need. How many "Which EBC shall I choose (cos I'm too thick to search)", "How much boost is safe" type posts etc.

Don't know about you but that annoys me more then having a list of similar threads pop up for me to look at which may answer my question without the need to post the same old cack over and over.

People don't seem to be able to use the search function. So simply make it so they do.

Good idea in theory but in practice it would do my head in.

Nice idea...but a couple of issues.

1) Load it would place on server.
2) I would say it would annoy the hell out of 99%

I totally agree with the motive though...

Perhaps there is another option...moderation. We see a post about a BOV on rev1/2 and we lock it and tell the poster to perform a search??

We probably have 10 top posts like this...well lets write articles to cover them in the KB and we can point users to them??

Opinion???

How about just moving the search link to the centre of the page, just below the "Welcome...." bit - rescue it from the clutter?

And have a search box on each page instead of a link - make it easier for people to search :-s

I don't see how. Part of the posting new topic is it scans the title of you're post/subject and throws up a few similar posts. If one looks like what you are after read it if not carry on.

DC use the same kinda thing I believe. It was never annoying. I am sure it saved a hell of a lot of duplicate posts.

Like your idea too. However I think people will still ignore it.

Esmond, Will it put that much strain on the server? I can't see it would. If everyone here performed a search before posting would that not have the same effect?

I wouldn't expect you to, it's *my* head that I'm talking about and I can assure you this would annoy me :)

Nice in theory but it will be ignored and make things slower.

DC use the same kinda thing I believe.

They also run their forum like a concentration camp and are losing members *shrug*

It was never annoying. I am sure it saved a hell of a lot of duplicate posts.

You obviously enjoy the feature, I don't - duplicate posts keep forums alive, if every question was only ever asked once we'd be very quiet. In addition to this things change, new ideas and products come along, people learn alternatives etc etc... OK I don't want to see the same posts day in day out but there is no harm in a similar question being asked once in a while even if it does result in the poster being pointed at the search button.

Like your idea too. However I think people will still ignore it.

I agree but people generally ignore most things of this nature, new members hardly ever search for things before ploughing in with the usual questions - this is why the forum needs to be complimented by a detailed website with an FAQ that people hit before they come in here.

The Chairman of IMOC has one of the best MK2 FAQs around, I'm shocked it hasn't been donated to the club and used here in addition to his own site. Members in the know could then add MK1 and MK3 version and build on the MK2 one to ensure all the basics are there.

At the end of the day people are lazy, 20 minutes on Google will usually answer most of the questions you see on here but that doesn't help to build a club.

Maybe new subscribers should receive an introductory message that asks them to ensure they search first (maybe they do, it'a a while since I signed up?).

Heh, threw that one in since I knew the king of grammer was around

:) The way it should be. Stops the time wasters bothering me  PMSL. Kidding.

But I can't see how it'd be ignored. If it was ignored and we got another AFM/BOV post then we'd know that the search would have brought up those posts. There for the guy is a time waster and should be banned. (see above, kidding)

Oh well. We will have to rely on moderation then.

Indeed. The FAQ is brilliant, and has saved many an MR2 owner hunting around for the info, but it would be better if the whole thing could be a mix of NA and Turbo info and was put on here and updated - there's loads of holes in it that could be filled with some of the recent stuff on here.
No offence meant to Ben, though. :eye:

We're an MR2 club without our own MR2 FAQ at the moment!
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!
