What is the inner core material of an exhaust heat shield?

What is the inner core material of an exhaust heat shield?

Hi guys,

I was cutting through my mr2 turbos exhaust heat shield and noticed it has a slim core sandwiched between two plates when you get through it.

Weird question I know but could someone please tell me what the core material is made from??

Probably asbestos!
