New Purchase,,,, Where to start!?
Hi Everyone!
So i'm VERY happy to say i have just bought a Rev2 Mk2 MR2 in some kind of Yellow. It seems to have been painted in the past and faded in parts so now looks like 4 shades of yellow
Anyways, I had a friend of mine come along and look it over etc (he is an mr2 user too so knows what to look for) and we ended up getting it for a good price.
I has got just shy of 12 months MOT on it however....
I was thinking of giving it a bit of a service. It may have already been done but at least i would know where i stand.
So...... i'm thinking:
Oil and filter change
Add some Lucas oil stabalizer?
Injector cleaner / fuel system cleaner
I am changing the airfilter for an induction kit.
I don't / can't afford to go overboard but is that a good start at least?

Welcome!
Oil & Filter
Plugs
Dizzy Cap & Rotor Arm
Air filter / Induction kit
Gearbox fluid if no history
Cambelt? (Non Interference Engine so OK).
Forget oil stabilisers and Redex - theyre trash. Just use good quality oil, genuine filters and run a tank of super.
Enjoy!

^^ especially the bit about the oil stabilisers and redex. Complete waste of money and time. Change the oil out with a decent oil and make sure you change it on a regular basis and you'll be fine. Don't even bother with redex.. Just run on Super unleaded.
Even though it is a non interference engine I would still change the cambelt it snapping at high revs doesn't do the engine any favors.

Plugs - Any reccomendation? Iridium?
Dizzy Cap & Rotor Arm - Was done about 3 weeks ago
Air filter / Induction kit - Will be done asap
Gearbox fluid if no history - Will need to check but will look into it.
Cambelt? (Non Interference Engine so OK). - Makes me nervous, will see if i can find out when last done

Will run full tank of super into it. What oil is recommended? Also how regularly should it be changed?

Start with some pics!
Re: New Purchase,,,, Where to start!?
Cambelt is OK as in it if snaps it won't kill the engine... ususally. So i mean no panic to get it done in a major rush for top price.
A good 10w/40 should sort you out.
Plugs something like denso coppers - about £8. No need for iridiums on stock car.

Ok i found 5ltr of G Force 10w 40 semi and mahle oil filter along with 4 Denso TT plugs on opie oils site totaling under £30 so might opt for that or is that a bad idea?
Re: New Purchase,,,, Where to start!?
Is it a t-top or hardtop?
Re: New Purchase,,,, Where to start!?
NA or Turbo?
The stock airbox is sealed from the engine bay, has a large filter surface area and draws in cool air through the side pod. In comparison an aftermarket induction kit sucks in hot air from the engine bay and has a smaller filter surface area, it will sound louder but it'll make the car less responsive and reduce the power of the engine. I'd save your money and just fit a new panel filter element.

Luke my point is that rather than panicking that there is no history of a change, rushing to a garage and getting it done at a higher price (and we all know how much non specialists can ramp up the price on a cambelt change) that he has time to oh I don't know..... maybe search for an MR2 specialist? Perhaps a paid trader on here? Something I did actually which landed me at yours for a CAMBELT CHANGE
I don't see how that is bad advice at all.

Some people on a budget will delay the "big"/"expensive" jobs as much as possible including a cam belt change. Be wary if there is no service history of a cam belt change or it has exceeded its age/mileage as it wont last forever.
I thought I read about one years ago where the cam belt failed and it damaged the engine - think that was on a modified engine?
p.s. Luke did my last cam belt change.

Snapped a cambelt in a rev1 NA (more or less the same as the rev2) at max RPM while on a drift day. Fitted another one at the side of the track and drove it home.
Didn't get round to changing the tensioner and idlers for at least another month and it was perfectly fine. That engine took so much abuse and just kept on going.
Not advising people should ignore the cambelt servicing, but really not an issue if you overshoot the miles or times slightly with these engines.

But thats the problem, buying a car with no history could mean the car is on its original belt. Even if it has low milage the belt could be well past it use by date and previous owners have neglected it only taking the milage into account.
