Mr2 Mk2 Insurance for under 25's

Post by merdeux »

I wanted to ask any of you guys have your children insured on the policies with you?

I have tried to get a quote for me with my nephew on (18 years old) and have been flat refused by every company I've rang saying they wont insure anyone under 25 on this type of vehicle.

Not to mention my cheapest quote for myself only is £600+ and I've got a full clean driving history. Curse word the BD postcode but I guess after my last post about CCTV I am not surprised. I was just hoping it would be nearer £300 /£350 considering most of you over 30's are paying less than £200 I presume.

Anyhow back to the point anyone else got a teenager insured with them on their Mr2, if so which company?

Thanks

Hi,

I think you're going to struggle. Whilst a number of insurers like ourselves will insure drivers under 25 on these types of vehicles they won't as named drivers on parents/relative's policies as it looks like fronting in most eyes.

Kind Regards
Dan

I'm 24 and haven't had any issues getting quotes. Give Adrian Flux or other specialist insurerers a ring. I'm yet to find a car they won't cover me on at a reasonable price.

Even all the years ago when I was in my early 20s, until after 22 it was hard to get a quote that wasn't sky high. Once 22 had an mr2 NA and was paying just under a grand. clean licence/history, with 3 years NCB.

at 18 I couldn't insure anything powerful or sproty due to massivly high cost. Looking back, it was a good thing.

I always used Admiral since I was 18 and managed to insure MR2's and various other cars with no problem. I've been with Sky Insurance for the last couple of years though and they've been the cheapest by far, and offer club discounts :thumleft:

My experience with insurance companies.

Adrian Flux wanted £800+ so i phoned AIB Insurance and they could slash it be £300 So i phoned Adrian Flux back and they then matched it. Strange huh. Sky was just way to much.

Been with Adrian Flux for 4 yrs now but you need to haggle with them to get the best price i have found. Had to haggle with them this year as they wanted to raise it again but now paying the same as i did last year.

I've pretty much rang all the usual suspects even taking out the fact I wanna insure my nephew with me it's still ludicrously high for my age, experience , driving history and what really annoys me is they all give me the same spiel about how they take different factors into account when in reality it comes down to the postcode (not that I blame them) but just say so surely anyone who has done the job for a while will know that.

I'm sure I'll get a representative along to correct me no doubt.

On a good note I did manage to find a company that would insure my nephew with me the quote I hear you ask .............£12000.

If I ran an insurance company, I wouldn't cover an 18 year old on an MR2 and I wouldn't cover Bradford either.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Are you going to pay it monthly or altogether?

I always wanted a v8 or turbo (or something sporty really) when I was one of those young people. Had to wait until I was older and grumpier to be able to afford the insurance.

He may just have to wait.

Haha I was thinking of remortgaging.

I understand when you are young its one of those things considering he might get to drive it once if he's lucky and its not like its gonna be a 9-5 car its most likely gonna do no more than 2000/3000 miles a year.

Its probably only gonna be used between March and September on dry days.

He showed a big interest in my last Mr2 and he also saw that camaraderie between mr2 drivers the little nods and quick chats at traffic lights so I thought why not and plus the fact his insurance on Micras and what not is coming in over 2k, I just thought maybe a classic policy might work out cheaper and much more interesting car to drive than a Micra.

I just thought £1500 would have been more than adequate price.

Unfortunately charged I agree with you but unless I'm prepared to give up everything and restart again in an insurance friendly postcode I don't really have any options but to rant about being an honest careful driver in a city full of dishonest ones.

I don't understand how your statement helps matters though as I already stated my postcode is bad for insurance.

It is a difficult situation, I'm afraid you might be out of luck as previously stated due to location and type of car i'm pretty sure that all insurers would say no.

I would try classic line but I don't think they insure under 25's.

Insurers work out your policy pricing based on risk and sadly you've got the 3 things against you.

Young driver
Bad postcode
powerful rear wheel drive car

I think you're probably best just not insuring him on the car I'm afraid. I'd like to give you better news but sadly just the fact of the matter.

Yeah I think you're right Draven as it was gonna be a second car for me I just thought he would be able to enjoy it too rather than it just sat in Garage.

Also at the risk of falling into another stereotype about Bradford I thought it would be good to get his interest into an Mr2 rather the other potential hobbies that are available to teenagers here.

I am just glad I'm not having to insure a powerful 4x4 turbo can you imagine that Draven? I guess I'm just gonna have to satisfy that itch by following your progress on yours.

The insurance companies are probably sick of young people being 'occasional driver' of cars when they are actually the person that drives it 99% of the time as well.

When he reaches 21 it'll get a lot easier - I went from a Ford KA to a 320bhp Scooby when I was 21  Just got to be patient but it's worth the wait!

I'm 24 now and still don't trust myself with the MR2 though

I don't think i could afford to insure said 4x4 if I was in your area, luckily due to my age and location it is only £500 per year for a group 40 vehicle.

:thumleft:

It is a little ironic that my rubbish 1.9 diesel daily is like £360 per year.. It really doesn't make sense to me.

Same here Draven - my daily 97 Honda CRV is more expensive to insure than the modified MR2 Turbo and MX5 :-k

I'm guessing it is a mileage thing, I mean I'll probably do less than 3k per year in the Evo and more like 12k something in the Daily more risk in that respect. Especially as I go on the M1, i swear people are getting worse at driving.

I should be about this weekend if you wanna come have a look at the Evo. I really want to see the paint job on your 2.
