Barn find

Post by tottacrolla »

Sort of.
Going to be digging my rev 1 Turbo out of very long storage, last driven 10 Years ago !
When it went into the garage it needed a replacement alternator but now I fear the list will be considerably longer.
Last time I looked the interior was covered in mildew and the engine, not surprisingly would not start.
My first tasks will be to sort the interior and get the engine running, drain fuel tank, new oil (bought up to pressure on the starter) plugs and distributor cap.
I'd like to post up some photo's on here, can someone please help me with posting pictures ?
Thanks

Just remember the change brake pads, discs and most importantly Tyres. The tyres will be fubar'ed after 10yrs of standing.

Car is back home and I have discovered a few issues, radiator looks knackered and whilst it appears to still hold coolant most of the cooling fins are broken off of the water channels.
The fuel pump doesn't ! No fuel at the fuel rail and shorting the B+ Fp pins makes a spark but no pumping action happens ! I have read about the pump connection under the centre console, anyone have a picture of it ? I guess it is just live and Earth ?
I'll post up some pictures over the weekend but right now I'm off out in the AE86 to do a road rally.

Fuel tank out and pump removed. Needs a new pump, any suggestions for something that will fit like the stock one and not cost an arm and a leg (Toyota)
Underside of car is near perfect with just a few bolt heads with rust on them and all of the under tray bolts undid without issue.
Whilst the tank is out, horrible job by the way, is there anything I should be looking closely at ?
The list so far:
Radiator
Alternator
Fuel pump
Caliper rebuild kits x 4
Brake discs
Brake pads
Tyres.

Won the rally :D

On the subject of brakes, can I assume that U.K N/A calipers are the same as Rev 1 turbo ?

UK and Japanese market brakes are the same regardless of aspiration. The only difference is between the revisions. Rev1 has smaller brakes than Rev2-5.

Consider upgrading to the later calipers... they are better and use a bigger disc. Rev1 is still OK though :thumleft:

Something to think about for the future I guess, I don't remember having too many issues with the brakes fitted but then I've not tried the bigger ones !
Fuel pump wise it would be nice to use a standard replacement but I suspect it will be both expensive and hard to obtain. I have been sent an FSE (Walbro ?) pump itp306 and here are the specs:
Voltage DC:- 12v
Flow Ltr/Hr (Max):- 216 Ltrs
Flow Ltr/Hr @ 3 Bar (44psi):- 165 Ltrs
Flow Ltr/Hr @ 5 Bar (73psi):- 120 Ltrs
Max Pressure (Bar):- 7.2
I really don't want to have to do this job again so I wonder can anyone confirm that this is the correct pump. Physically it fits ok
Most people seem to fit the 255 LPH pump, is there a good place to get them from ? Thanks

And here is the comparison:
Mine:
Voltage DC:- 12v
Flow Ltr/Hr (Max):- 216 Ltrs
Flow Ltr/Hr @ 3 Bar (44psi):- 165 Ltrs
Flow Ltr/Hr @ 5 Bar (73psi):- 120 Ltrs
Max Pressure (Bar):- 7.2

Walbro as stated above:
Voltage DC:- 12
Flow Ltr/Hr (Max):- 222
Flow Ltr/Hr @ 3 Bar (44psi):- 168
Flow Ltr/Hr @ 5 Bar (73psi):- 126
Max Pressure:- 6.6

Not much in it, do you know if people use the 255 pump as an 'upgrade' to the stock one ?

Oh and by the way if you need to drop the fuel tank and your car has air con it is much easier if you remove the front anti roll bar brackets !

if the tank is out, you may as well fit a genuine walbro 255, they're only about £80 new and that way it's future proofed if you decide to go for more power down the line, it's not really a job you want to do twice :thumleft:

Here is the car

I'd like to replace the front splitter with something more durable, any suggestions ? Damage was caused by a little wooden post hiding in long grass.
Top Tip.
A weak thick bleach solution sorts mildew instantly with no issues.
(Thanks goes to my late Dad for that one)

and the plot thickens...

Thomp, thank you for the offer of the pump but in the end I paid the extra £20 for a 255LPH one.
Thanks to everyone for your input so far.
