ICE Illumination

Post by mrmike »

Hi All

New to the club, and need assistance please, I have a MR2 tubby (Import 1993 with passive system). I removed the original system and fitted UK spec Radio/Cassette and CD player (types 13703 and 74209 respectively). The problem lies with the illumination of the units. As soon as the side lights are switched on both units fails to illuminate, leaving me with a large area of darkness. All other aspects of the units work fine. (With the original units fitted (radio cassette and premier sound system units) illumination works fine) Any ideas.

Cheers

Wierd. There is an illumination circuit on these cars - it drives the cigar lighter ring etc as well as the sidelights!.

It's either no illumination power feed getting to the stereo unit, or the bulbs have gone in the stereo (unlikley).

I'd try getting the facia panel off, and then having a look at the wires:

use the 12v permanant feed and see which wire in the stereo's harness turns on the illumination? be careful not to short anything.

then, determine which wire in the wiring loom has the illumination feed to the stereo (ie goes from 0v to 12v when sidelights turned on)

the above two should be connected securly together via the plug. Is this happening?

some aftermarket stereos don't bother with a seperate illumination circuit (usually orange) they just have perm feed and accesories (red and yellow). In this case, the accesory input should turn on the stereo's illumination.

If you've got a spare wire from the head unit harness for illumination that isn't being energised by your car's wiring loom, then splice it into the accesory feed.

This way you'll have light day and night, which is better than no light at all.

I hope this makes sense and helps you out

Ian
