Oil cooler delete

Post by JAAASH »

Ok so, I've bought a new exhaust manifold for my rev 3 turbo, buuuuut due to me using a rev 2 block the oil filter is totally in the way ](*,)
So, simple right? Oil filter relocation kit. Uhhh nuh. I still dont have enough clearance between the manifold runners and block/oil cooler to fit an oil take off plate.

My question(s). How 'necessary' is the stock oil cooler? Can I just delete it and use a shorter oil filter bolt (taken from a non oil cooler car) straight from the block? Will I need an 'aftermarket' oil cooler or can I run without one?

Good to know. I may be in touch, based on the result of this thread :thumleft:

You will need an oil cooler IMO, so if you ditch the water to oil cooler then you'll need an air to oil cooler.
But make sure you get a thermostatic regular as you may struggle to get the oil warm enough on normal running.

Depends on how you drive I reckon- as Mikey says- with a cooler you can (will) struggle to get your oil up to temp on the road (that's why I ditched mine), and with a remote plate you'll probably find you get enough cooling anyway....but if you're tracking/ racing then an air-oil (or even a water-oil) cooler is probably a great idea :thumleft:

Thanks for the replies guys.
Thermostats were going to be one of my next questions.
The car is primarily just going to be used on the road but I do plan on doing the odd track day, plus the Le Mans trip, etc. So I'm sort of confused now on whether I'll need a cooler or not :-k

I'd say try it without and see what happens, if things get too hot add a cooler- you'd still need the remote filter plate and lines anyway- so you don't waste any cash by trying it that way round :thumleft:
