Replacement gear shift cables

Post by bungral »

The gear shift on my Mk2 Rev 3 Turbo is pretty rough and I think it might be down to the cables.

It's been pointed out to me that the cables on Rev 2 NA wouldn't be a straight swap as one of them is slightly different in length.

Now is this a difference between Revs or between NA / Turbos?

As in will Rev 3 NA cables fit a Rev 3 Turbo or would Rev 2 Turbo cables be ok?

I have searched it and found contradicting answers in various places so figured I'd ask for a definitive answer from someone here who knows.

Cheers.

According to the Toyota EPC the part numbers of the Turbo and the NA cables are different. The gear cables are the same on all revisions of the NA MR2 and all revisions of the MR2 turbo use the same gear cables.

Do you have the standard gear lever assembly? Have you renewed the gear linkage bushes? Aftermarket short shift lever kits and worn gear linkage bushes are the most common cause of poor gear shifts.

Ok so I'm look for any revision of turbo cable.

Yeah it's all standard and I've not changed the bushes yet. I bought the kit and have it at home but didn't want to fit it if the old cables are crap.

Didn't think the bushes could make it quite as bad as it is. Reverse really sucks.

Perhaps I'll try the bushes anyway as I can always remove them and fit them to new cables if it doesn't help.

Replace the bushes first, I've just done mine along with a gearbox oil change and it has completely transformed the gear changes, they are so much smoother now. I was also having problems getting into reverse, which is no longer a problem.
