Ticking when warm

Post by mr299ron »

Can anyone diagnose what it could be if the engine is ticking when warm? I drove 300 miles at the weekend which I think has caused it somehow, as it's only started ticking louder since then.

The last time I did an oil change was 1500 miles ago, but I'm going to do another one anyway just to rule out that.

The noise sounds like it's coming from the intercooler (obviously isn't but you get where I'm coming from) on the drivers side and not when I open the engine lid or listen from below.

Anyone have a clue as to what this is?

I get a rattle from something from about 3k revs to, which could be something to do with it, I'm not sure. The rattling gets quite violent though which makes me think it's not just a heat shield.

Cheers

I had a rattle develop on the intercooler side, it turned out that one of the brackets on my GReddy intercooler had cracked, got it welded and problem solved. Checking to see if there is any movement in the intercooler would rule this out.

cracked or warped exhaust manifold, maybe.

Could be the intercooler rattling I'll go and see if it wiggles about. I've heard it being a common problem, but only on the greddy ones? Never heard of the stock intercoolers having this problem.

I thought it might have been a cracked manifold but was told this was only on the rev 1s?

Lol so just went out for a little drive as i've recently fitted a berk exhaust so lots of pointless trips atm, and i was getting a bit fed up with it always ticking at me at the traffic lights. So got to the dually, hit 3rd, drove to about 4.5k revs and nailed it to the red line and hit 100 and slowed down.

Next set of traffic lights..

Tick has gone.

Not quite sure what to make of it. Don't know if maybe a piston has flown out the back or whether it's just gone.. either way, no more ticking lol

Just gotta sort out the rattle above 3k revs. Reckon it's something to do with the exhaust catching on something. Not sure... More drives it is :D

from the description i'd say heatshield.

the fixing points snap and then they resonate at certain rev points. the ticking is it contracting after expanding during use. the metal fatigues and snapps over time.

once it's not all the original shape anymore due to cracks or snapped off fixings, it ticks more and will resonate at about 3500rpm.

Only fixes are to replace the shield (if it's an important one) or remove it.
as a short term solution, they can be twisted/crushed into the exhaust a little more to stop them moving around where the fixing is missing. this can prevent the resonating at revs. it does depend on the heatshield and where it's broken.

To check for exhaust manifold leaks you can also dangle some tissue around it whilst you rev it a little at the throttle body.

Hhaha .. check around where the turbo attaches to the manifold too that can make a ticking sound when loose.

Hope you sort it and dont burn your hand

The ticking sound has gone away 2mad. It's just the weird rattle above 3k revs.. The car is going into a garage on Wednesday for a dyno run to sort the downpipe from catching the wastegate, and I'll ask them to check what could be making this noise!

do a smoke test.

i found an exhaust leak (not tight mani to turbo nuts).
that caused a tick.

get a cig, attach a hose into the o2 sensor holes, block exhaust tips, blow into hose, see if/where smoke comes out, jobs and good'n.
