Is the latching mechanism dis-engaging when you pull the release lever? get someone to pull the release lever while giving the bonnet a 'tap' around the catch area and see if it pops.

Has the latch made the pop sound and isn't opening? Maybe try disconnecting the cable from the lever in the driver footwell and pulling the cable with some plyers on the end to get it to pop.

Get someone to push down on the bonnet while you use a pair of plyers to pull the release cable.

I had this on one of my MR2s.

Then make sure the cable is nice and tight and has some grease on the latch before closing the bonnet again.

As Draven said, keep the latch lubed in future. A sticky latch can come undone on its own too as well as preventing opening.
