Tyres

Post by fred130111 »

Looking to replace my rear tyres as the idiot who owned it before put 205/40/17 all round.

Fronts are fine
But with the rears I was looking at getting 225/40/17 which from what I have read are fine but the tyres I want to get are Toyo T1-R and they don't do that size ](*,) but they do a a 235/40/17 or a 225/45/17

If I get the 235's I will have to up the fronts to 215 right?
But if I get the 225's they are up from 40 to 45, Is this that much of an issue?

Don't want to spend a huge about just some semi decent tyres.

Thanks!

Depends on wheels widths at rear.

Might be just as cheap buying a set of 2nd hand alloy wheels with good tyres, failing that, http://www.oponeo.co.uk/?gclid=CM2_kM2K ... tAod72AAJg

Cheapest by quite a long way :thumleft:

235's will be fine for the rears depending on rim widths, i'm sure whatever size is on the front will be fine, it's not as if you are running WOT round a race track all the time

Thanks Martin,

Yeah I will need a new set of wheels at some point! Thinking lenso samurai d1r but for now.....

225/40/17 seems to be a incredibly rare size? ](*,)

My main concern / question is would using a 45 instead of 40 at the rear have a negative effect on handling? I notice people tend to go down to a 35....

Thanks

35 profile is simply to keep the rolling radius of the wheel/tyre combo the same as stock....

On that link above, you can play with the tyre profile to see how much the speedo over-reads by.

Yeah I thought that would be why, apologies for the stupid questions. Never really cared about tyres sizes on all my other cars I have owned so my knowledge is very limited

So basically increasing to a 45 would mean the speedo will over read slightly ( not that bothered as have a GPS unit wired in ) And will also mean that there will be more flex on the tyre wall? But I guess this can be countered by slightly increasing tyre pressure?

Thanks.

No such thing as a stupid question! Yeah, 45 profile on a 17 would over-read on the speedo due to the difference in rolling radius compared to the original wheel/tyre. In addition to this, you could have problems with arch/suspension/tyre clearance if the tyre profile is too big. I personally wouldn't go larger than a 40 profile front and back on 17s.

Thanks dude! yeah had a think and its also lowered on tein super street coilovers so will probably be best trying to get hold of some 235/40/17!

Seem to be so much more expensive than the 225 ](*,)
Anyone got some suggestions that will be similar to the Toyo T1-R's

Thanks

hmmm, everywhere I am looking it seems that the 235 is double the price of the 225 ](*,)

I guess I will have to measure to see if I can fit a 45 profile without rubbing. Literally cant find a 225/40/17 anywhere ](*,)

Strange. I've had falkens for years and never had a problem with them. I had Toyo t1r once and they wore down quickly.

I agree, the Toyo's do seem to wear pretty quickly.

Other tyre options to consider are, Uniroyal Rainsport 2 or 3,
and Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta which look good on www.tyrereviews.co.uk.

Lol not going to be going to be tracking much / if at all dude, I need to work out if I have a 7j or 7.5j rim

If 7.5j I will go for 235/40
If 7j I will go for the 225/45 ( can not find a 40 anywhere )

Done a bit of looking and checked reviews, in order cheapest to most expensive.

Kumho KU39 ( apparently pretty good ) £67 a tyre
Toyo Proxes T1 Sport ( meant to be better than the T1R ) £84 a tyre
Goodyear Eagle F1 ( heard a lot of good things about these ) £91 a tyre

p.s remember mine is an N/A so not going to be breaking any speed records any time soon
