Question for the V6 boys

I'm keeping a look out for a v6 engine for my na Rev 5. I think the 2gr is out of budget. That leaves me with the option of a 3vz from a Camry (cheapest) or 1mz from a rx300 which seem to be 2-3k! Is it worth putting in the extra cash to get the vvti on the 1mz or can the 3vz be just as affective with porting? Also, is there anyone local to the Hereford/Worcester region that would give me a spin with their V6 so I know the conversion is worth while?

I've bought 2 1MZ VVTi engines complete for no more than £1500 each time.

the 1mz in the rx300 is the vvti version, the later camrys ('95 on i believe) had the normal non vvti 1mz engine which if i was to do another would be the lowest id go for, 3vz's are old hat now there a good engine and im happy with mine but complete running 1mz camry's are now only £1-200 more than a running 3vz camry so for a couple of hundred quid extra it's a no brainer.

in terms of pretty much expense, ease of fitment, power and availability it goes,

3vz (early camrys pre '95) circa 180bhp
1mz (later camrys post '95) circa 200bhp
1mz vvti (lexus rx300) circa circa 220bhp
2gr (import from the states) circa 280bhp

Looks like an Rx300 it is then. Had anyone done any head work to one of these with good results? Also I've seen a few late camrys. 02, 03 reg. would these be vvti also?

You should be able to pick up a breaking camry for upwards of 500 quid - earlier ones got the 3VZ and later ones got a 1MZ, some with vvti

Helps to have the loom and ECU as well as the engine.

I think headcase is selling a 2gr over on two brutal if you fancy a challenge

We have a complete Camry 1mz engine bundle spare that has been removed from the car with everything needed for £1500 delivered, this one is a bit special having only 46k on the clock.

It won't be here long though, the next inhouse customer booking will be getting it.

Mmm - 1MZ might not make you any faster but it certainly sounds good

The 1mz will have 20-30bhp on a rev 5 n/a lump but the torques what it's all about. In my 3vz on a twisty country road i rarely need more than 3rd or 4th for overtakes or approaching bends, my old rev3 n/a engine needed alot more gearchanges and keeping the revs high to get it going

what's the weight difference between 3sge (or 3sgte) and 2grfe engines?
how does 2grfe swap change the weight distribution of car?

Bar one that Peter built i think i've built every other VVti 1mz Mk2 in the UK, although i could be wrong, head over to TB and ask if one of my customers will give you an opinion on them.

My personal opinion is that a vvti 1mz is similar to a stock rev3 turbo in 0-60 etc.... but for me the V6 edges it on power delivery, driveability and the sheer noise of them. The 2gr is in a league of its own, so much torque just everywhere in the rev range, but there is a huge price difference between a vvti 1mz and a 2gr.

Barely anything in it, the 3s engines are iron block, the 2gr is alloy.

There's more difference in the amount of fuel you put in the tank or carrying a passenger etc.

Cheers Paul, that's good to know. I think it's looking like an rx300 then for me for a couple of reasons. It's a daily driver (I have a turbo weapon in the garage, not an mr2), I want to retain the rev 5 hubs/shafts etc to keep the cost down and there are plenty of rx's out there.

Keeping a look out for bits for the project now and will be starting it in September
