My Turbo Convesion...what mods to go for?

Post by poyntesm »

Hi guys,

Right as some of you may know I am planning a turbo conversion with the good boys at rogue.

To see my donor car being taken to pieces check out rogue cam

http://81.86.66.193/

I will be taking one of there new exhuasts too.

What small mods (not expensive) should I look at getting fitting at install time. Guages, FCD's, MBC's,???

Regards

Don't bother with an MBC IMO. Go for nice EBC, boost gauge, air filter and a nice aftermarket dump valve. I've got a greddy profec B2 which is a nice simple way of controlling boost, not as tricky as an avcr to set up!

Air filter ~ 100

Hmm, depends where you get your dump valve. I'd got HKS/Blitz/Sard/Apexi, but new they could be nearly £200  But there's nearly always someone selling them cheap. I managed to get my hks ssqv dv for £50 8) Have a look on ebay...

I just got an apexi induction jobby, set me back about £125 from Envy performance.

Here's a pic of the Greddy B2
Image
It comes in silver too. Google.com it and click images. Its a really small unit too, and sits very nicely on top of the steering column. Haven't got any pics of mine on the computer yet.

I like it. Its simple, and easy to install. I managed to get mine off ebay from the states for around £130, and I've got friends over there so get them to send it on so I don't get charged again!

Or you could go for a short shifter? Or a nice turbo timer? Infact, Greddy to a turbo timer that matchs the boost controller perfectly. They'd look nice together.

Yeah think the Apexi induction kit for sure.

Nice dump valve, should not be a problem since I am getting a rev5 engine.

Only thing am I not sure is whether to spend the money on a ebc. What are the main benefits?

EBC vs MBC?

MBC, get out the car, have a little fiddle, get back in the car, see if it boost where you want, if not, get out the car, have a fiddle, get back in, etc etc etc.

EBC, plug it in. Foot down, if its not boosting right, twiddle a knob from the comfort of your drivers seat and change the boost.
On the GReddy you can change the gain and the set gain, (spool up and consistency). Built in digital boost gauge, warning settings, Variable boost limits. Low and hi boost settings, ie mine is 15psi on the lo setting, and when I fancy, click 'hi' and it runs 17/18psi. Great for when you bump into boxter S's! and a bit of bling in the cockpit!

I'd definately pick an EBC over an MBC, there's just so much more to them. Also, on the greddy, you put your foot down, turbo comes on, then when you slow down, the bc flashes the highest boost it just hit, so its great for monitoring whats going on.

Yup, I've got a greddy profec B 2 on the way. I wanted something accurate and reliable for boost control. The AVCR's are getting a bit old these days and the blitz DSBC spec R is too pricey for me. The greddy looked good :)
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

Best thing is when you pull up at the Co-Op and the short sighted little old ladies try to get in your car saying "is this the number 11 bus luvvie...."

LOL true!

You obviously don't boost enough

Ever heard a CT26 @ 15psi or a CT20b at 19psi with the stock BOV? Sounds much better IMO :P

on the rev3+ motor's the VSV is just too darned clevr and doesn't always give full boost when you plant yer foot down. Can take upto 1krpm for the boost to hit the max.

With an ebc you can get full boost everytime you put your foot down and you have the choice of turning the boost up or down as you see fit

Dump valve = chav, total complete waste of money the stock one is far better than ANY after market one.

MBC over EBC much simpler to setup, fraction of the price controls boost perfectly.

so that'll save you £200 on the dump valve and £400 on the boost controller, take that saving any buy something usefull like a Power FC

p.s. the cheap but most usefull mod to do first iss a boost gauge.

Its a shame, well catch 22 about having such a new engine as the ideal thing to have done before getting the engine in would be a decat, but as its a post 1994 engine they'll expect a cat at MOT.
