Way to test Fuel Pump Relay?

Post by IMR2T »

Hi guys, fuel pump works but getting no power." To it.

Getting a multi meter today but is there an off the shelf relay I can wire in today until I get a proper one?

Which fuel pump relay? Depending on car, it may have more than one.

Make, model, revision?

Rev1 Turbo

I did the diagnostic port bridge and the pump comes on but nothing without it.

So you have two relays to test. The CO relay in the rear fuse box, and the relay next to the resistor packs on the rear bulkhead.

Download a wiring diagram off the internet for pinouts etc.

Depends which relay. If it's a relay that has failed.

bu88er.

Both CO and Fuel pump relays are within parameters going by the online manual.

What would I look at next?

Check your getting power and earth to both relays. Do you have an afm? iirc if you switch the ignition on and open the afm flap you should be able to see/hear the co relay switch

Ok, I'm still learning the acronyms, lol

Ok here's a bit of background, my timing belt snapped last wk and when it went there was a clear audible fizzing/sizzling from the relay/fuse box after the car broke down.

I didn't try and find exactly where it came from as I was crying like a woman hugging my engine!!

First question, how do I check I'm getting power and earth?

I do have an afm

What's an iirc?

iirc is if i remember correctly, sizzling noises may well just be the manifolds cooling.

For testing the electrics you really want a multimeter

iirc is what sorry? Nah the sizzling was def electrical type buzzing, the AA guy said it was prob just my relays but I'd never heard them make a noise like that before.

I have a multimeter. Learning how the fecker works but just tried another ECU I have and still nothing.

Also disconnected the AFM and no joy.

If your certain it was electrical then check the wiring under the engine bay fuse box.

Wgat happens when you switch the ignition on, do you get all the normal dash lights?

Have you replaced the timing belt? What happens when you crank the engine?

Ok, will get a look under the fuse box, is there potential of burnt out wires?!

Yeah mate, normal lights all come on.

Yeah belts done along with AC and Altenator belt. When cranking it turns over normally and sounds normal.

-All my plugs are sparking.
-I have fuel in the tank.
-I've tried the diagnostic port fuel pump bridge and it comes on straight away.

Either jacking the drivers side of the engine up and down has loosened something or my Clifford's being a d*ck!

Does it start with b+ and fp bridged? are you sure you timed it correctly?

Yeah it does.

Haha, I did question my timing but I'm pretty sure.

For the cams I lined up the hole in the S sprocket with the vertical indents on the engine case.

For the crank I lined up the middle of the notch on the crank with the 0deg mark on the timing cover.

It would still start though just run like poo if my timing was out.

My fuel pump has 2 plugs connectors on top of it. The 3wire plug has a live feed on the middle wire. The 2 wire plug has nowt with or without ignition.

Wait, does the pump start with the bridge - yes

Does the car start with it bridged no.

Just Incase I misread your question.

One plug is for the pump the other is the fuel level. check for voltage at the fuel pump resistor there known to fail anyway, you can bypass it at the wiring plug to check. If there's no voltage at the resistor you need to work backwards from it

Your fuel pump has one two pin connector.

Your fuel level sender unit has one 3 pin connector.

Check the operation of the C.O. relay with a voltmeter.

Ok, I'm a newbie with a multimeter.

I had the CO relay out to see if it's click with the power probe and it did but will get the metre on it.
