Updating 20 year old suspension - on the cheap

Post by wenguin »

I scrapped my old thread as it was a brain dump. New question:

My rev3 has 20 year old suspension. What should I upgrade that will give me the biggest improvement on handling, for the least amount of money?

My internal logic has been, the struts are probably shot (but I don't know how to test) so I should focus on those. But buying used ones seems hit or miss.

When it comes to other components - tie rods, ARB stuff, drop links etc. I am clueless as to what needs upgraded, and what to buy.

Any tips/advice welcome.

I'm happy to make small changes over time - £500+ for coilovers seems overkill on a car I paid £900 for and will probably sell in approximately 1 year.

Sounds like the shocks are way passed their best even if they were to pass an MOT. Do you get a lot of suspension noise when hitting bumps?

I had this even with a low mileage rev3 turbo on original shocks and oem wheels. It just wouldn't handle anywhere near as good as my other rev3 turbo even after I swapped the wheels over (to eliminate the difference in tyres). I put new standard shocks on all round which was not cheap but it transformed the car and the car was a lot more fun and sporty to drive on twisty roads without feeling the bumps as harshly.
The suspension was also a lot quieter.

To be honest, no noticeable noises. 115k miles, passed MOT last year fine no advisories, standard wheels.

The replacement OEM non-bilstein shocks are like £360 form GTSChris, and almost double that for bilsteins.

I guess I can just wait out someone breaking a car with comparatively newish struts?

Someone is selling a set of used coilovers on facebook, think they were buddyclubs or similar, for £350.

Mine was the same... with less than 90,000 miles on the clock.

Usually I only change shocks when one starts leaking or fails an MOT.
As it is a gradual degradation in performance over many years I guess people don't notice it as it is what they are used to, it passes the MOT, and the car still get them A to B ok.

With this car I changed the shocks early as I had another MR2 (200,000+ miles on the clock) with fresher (half-life) stock suspension for direct comparison and that that handled way better in spirited driving.

I noticed the handling difference when I test drove the car before buying it. I initially put it down to cheaper tyres and the tracking was out. I did not even think it could be tired shocks as well as they seemed firm when I tried to push down on them.

If you are selling the car in a year there is probably no point doing it as you wont get your money back when you sell it. On the other hand if it keeps you out of a hedge they will be worth it!
(I once had to swerve in and out of a bus stop at 40mph in a 40mph limit to avoid a driver (that must have been on drugs) that suddenly decided to do an impossible overtake of the 3 cars in front of them with me coming the other way, so I was very happy to have such a good handling car!)

If the rest of the suspension is tight, the only other thing that I have noticed make a difference is replacing the cancer bars if they have rusted through (the rear suspension lower bracing bars). These are cheap and easy to remove and bolt on.

4 standard struts from Toyota will make a world of difference. About £65 each IIRC.

You need to decide what level of comfort you want before buying. Coilovers might be cool to have, but they won't give you the same level of comfort as OEM.

Indeed, and if you're after any level of comfort you can forget the vast majority of JDM options like Buddy Club or Tein. I'm sure they are lovely on the smooth Japanese roads, but the description of them from the eBay auction (assuming it's the same ones) says it all:

"Selling as I can't be dealing with bumpy/bouncy ride every day - I've reverted to shocks and springs instead! I'd these would be ideal for a track car, but it's personal preference I suppose."

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BuddyClub-Jun ... 1688359854

There's a MiesterR group buy at the moment which seem to get good reviews, and I personally am happy with my BC's with 4/6KG F/R springs on a ~80 mile a day road car. They are firmer and noisier than stock (expected), but ride quality is pretty decent, it's not bouncy at all.

macpherson is the type of suspension not a brand.

The UK and non turbo import stuff, barring anniversary stuff is made by kyb.

The springrates between NA and turbo are slightly different also iirc due to weight differences.

Suspension (much like pretty much most things on the car lol) is better not done on the cheap anyway.

The Anni's have different suspension? I thought the differences were all cosmetic.

Agree about 'on the cheap' in the sense you mean it, but I think getting OEM struts, and refreshing other suspension components is the cheapest 'good' method of upgrading what I currently have.

Cheaping out with poor/old coilovers, or 10+ year old suspension from another car is something I want to avoid.

Unless I find someone breaking relatively new, working order bilstein black or yellow struts, I think I'll just buy OEM KYB (TIL!) struts from toyota or gtschris and go that route.

I've contacted by local toyota dealership, hope to hear back soon :)

I know that i bought trd inserts for my rev1 :thumleft:

My point is still valid £65 for macpherson inserts or bilstein.

On the cheap.....depends on your definition of cheap

Can't see point in replacing with second hand stuff if you want it to feel refreshed!

If it were me i'd go for the new toyota dampers option, esp at £65 a corner! (surprised they're that cheap).

May be worth having a few quid spare for new top mounts and damper dust covers in case they're shot when you remove old stuff.

Oh, and don't forget about getting full allignment done afterwards.
