What MR2 do I have?? :-k

Post by IMR2T »

Hi guys, I enjoy a project every now and then for the week ends and I took hold of a scratched, rusting, leaking, non running, limp, d.i.y. wired MR2 Turbo.

But over the nxt 6months I'll bring it back to life.

Now here's the thing...I saw the rear lights, power steering, ABS channels and thought it was a Rev3. It's on a private plate and had no V5 so wasn't sure of the year of registration.

My main concern was NOT buying a Rev1 as the potential 'toeing out' with hard cornering, smashing all my hard work doesn't turn me on!

It's a J plate. So it's a Rev1 #-o

But, I thought they had no power steering or Abs??

It has a few goodies on it which I need clarification on as I have NO idea what they do.

Will get pics up soon.

One question I have is I have a massive rectangle box with a lead connected onto it after my air filter. Is that the Rev1 afm that makes it hard to run a dump valve?

Cheers guys 👍

Lift off oversteer...hmm, I thought it was more the suspension being fully compressed...I'll take it easy until I can swap the subframe and trailing arms.

That's the bad boy, does the Rev1 not bog down due the air being measured then vented?

Cheers for the welcome. Still uploading pics to photo bucket to show some pics.

J reg is a rev2, the snap oversteer issues won't affect you :thumleft:

What should my chassis code be?
What will my engine no be?
Any tell tale signs elsewhere it is/is not a Rev1?

The pic i posted if you look at the top of the throttle body theres 2 vac lines attached .. rev1's only have one .. thats a good way of telling a rev1 from a rev2 engine :thumleft:

^This.

J reg could be either rev1 or rev2. Chassis number is the best way to tell, but the above is a good visual check.

It is possible but it's most likely a rev2, G/H are rev1, J/K are rev2 although you can get a rev3 on a K plate as well and I believe a late registered rev2 on an L!! as said check the vac lines :)

Yep my Rev2 was originally on an L plate.

If you punch the VIN number from the plate on the front wall of the frunk into the following website it will confirm exactly what you have:

Just be careful in the wet with the lift-off, it's not exaggeration - I'd guess at least half of the owners on here have crashed MR2 at some point (myself included)

Post some pics and we can prob tell you in about 5 seconds!

but reg isnt always a guarantee of what year the car actually is, as some cars when new sit on forecourts for a long time unregistered so end up on a later plate than expected...i've seen a rev2 on a M reg! and guess its not impossible for a rev5 to be out there on an X even!

Awaiting pics!

Mine is one of the earliest rev1... But i've changed to coilovers, full polibushed and modified geometry using Dino's settings over 17" alloys. :rambo:

Noticed a big improvement in handling

We will have the Rev1 subframe please, have a Rev2 one here to replace it with.

As it is a private plate, the J plate does not necessarily mean it is from a J reg year. See the DVLA Registrations website which gives all the rules about private plates.

e.g. I used to have an M reg car that had an M reg private plate put on it. When I bought an L reg car I was not allowed to transfer the M reg over to it as it would have made the L reg car appear one registration year newer. Both cars were 1994 Rev 3 GT turbos.
It would have been ok to transfer the M private plate to a car that was originally an N reg... or even to a T reg etc.

Apart from that, some of the rev1/rev2 cars get modified (exterior and interior) to look like rev3 onwards. Some cars have engine transplants or conversions from n/a to turbo.

Most of joe public would not know the difference, but some of the enthusiasts would so posting pictures is the way forward.

The original VIN plate on the bulkhead behind the radiator will give a model code and a paint code. Post those up and the guys will tell you what it is and any obvious mods from the pictures.

The chassis number can be matched to a year/month of manufacture and maybe a rev number.

Good luck with the project.
