Cryo cooling

Post by Poker Face »

I stumbled across it while I was looking at something else, has anyone tried it on an MR2? If so what kind of increase do you get? Is it practical ( length of time it lasts, cost &so on).

I'm not sure if your asking about same thing, but the other day I was wondering if you could poss run liquid nitrogen in a charge cooler?
Or do it some other way.
No doubt it would be difficult and massively expensive.

I think the OP talking about the systems that use CO2 to cool the intercooler...it's a great idea, but share the same concerns- how long does it last, and more importantly to me- how heavy would it be?

There's also cryogenic treatments for steel that can increase it's strength- I'm guessing could be used on the block? No idea though- pretty sure I hear something about it a while back

Hey imagine it tho! if it was or is possible, the aim is to get the charge as cool as possible, nowt gets much cooler than liquid nitrogen,if you could do it I wonder how much difference it would make? :-k
I know its a bit out there but, it was only a bit of pondering, and besides I've run out of crack!

Closest type of charge cooling i've seen in relation to the above is the Chiller Killer.

Spoke to them few years ago about modifying for Simon's drag car but they would only supply what they list.

I don't like the idea of CO2 intercooler sprays.. especially on front engined cars when you're essentially CO2 drenching the engine bay

It's a gimmick, water sprays, in my opinion, is a much better idea- cheaper, easier and I think probably better. How much CO2 would you need to effectively lower the charge temp?, lots probably - bearing in mind a 2kg CO2 extinguisher lasts 8-9 seconds the amount of gas actually deployed by those "nos" lookalike chav sprays is probably minute, and totally ineffective whereas the heat transfer properties of a water spray is real, tangible and lasts more than a few seconds.

there's those "cooling bulb" things too, basically a CO2 cooled teardrop bulb fitted into a charge pipe, I've not tested them personally but my spidey senses tell me they're BS.

You could try freezing the intercooler/chargecooler :thumleft:

7.9hp improvement but at what cost I wonder?

If its expensive, possibly better chasing ponies else where?

I can see where you're coming from but if you are running high boost etc then bringing the inlet temps down would be worth it. DEI stuff isn't cheap, I'm sure there would be other companies that make something as good a little cheaper.
