Engine transplant, conflicting advice and opinions. Help please.

Post by BALDYMONSTER »

UK 93 N/A rev2, slowly getting it ready for its tubby conversion.

First engine turned out to be a non starter (no pun intended) so I have another one in the shadows so to speak.

Problem is I keep getting conflicting advice and opinions.

So here goes, the lump is a from an st185 Celica minus the turbo and it needs a new block to transfer everything into.

Now, here's the thing. I'm told that fitting this to my MR2 is more hassle than it's worth due to pipes not being the same?

Although others have claimed to have fitted this in their MR2 and mated it to the MR2 box, driveshafts and hubs no problem.

Can anyone shed some light on this entire thing?

Sounds like you've been offered a pile of parts, not an engine.

An ST185 long block assembly is same as Rev2 MR2.

Why mess around with scrap dealer-level parts?

Just get a complete rear clip as i suggested before Christmas.

No apology needed.

I'm simply saying the conversion will be cheaper and easier in the long run by buying a rear clip complete from a trusted source.

Complete rear clip is definitely the way to do it - any savings with the Celica engine option will soon be eaten up by all the little bits you'll end up finding are missing.

With a rear clip you have everything you need right there.

A "rear clip" is a phrase used to describe all those parts required to carry out a conversion, e.g. engine, gearbox, shafts, hubs, ECU etc.

Not sure if this is any good to you but I'm selling the full running gear from my rev 1 turbo. Its ideal for a conversion and its still in the car so can be heard running or even driven.

Rev1 running gear is completely different to rev2 NA. It would be considered a downgrade by many.

For my turbo conv I bought a complete rev1 turbo car for my rev5 n/a.

To be fair though if I had my time again I'd get a Rev 3 clip as suggested.
