So whats wrong with this one? looked thru Knowledge base but no joy

Post by masterbateson »

Have a peep at this ad, its been on for at least a month if not more, I searched the KB but only thing i could find was probs with 5th gear selection.

What is the most likely culprit for a knackered 2nd gear?

Is it most likely a knackered synchro or gear or bearing? or could it be like on the TF's and just a problem with the adjustment of the gear selector and cables etc?

Looks quite tidy apart from that prob, altho i am not keen on the alloys.

Sounds like the syncro to me. Second gear often seems to be the first to start crunching.

A lot of money for a Rev1 with gearbox issues.

Yeah its not exactly cheap, think seller expects more money as condition looks good, but as said I think he's expecting a bit much with a gearbox prob.
Oh wait a minute I forgot, its not a problem  :!: you just miss out 2nd!!

it'll be the box, there cheap enough if it's none lsd. It is on the pricey side but if you like the colour and it's has no rust then it's probably worth it, It generally costs more putting paintwork/rust right than minor mechanical niggles.

As with your other post about the rev5 auto it depends on what your plans are for the car if your looking at pushing over 300bhp then you really want to be starting with a rev3 engine

To be honest I would probably be happy with stock power, but if i did get one and had a few minor tweaks I would still only want to be 250-300 max territory.

250 sounds like a nice number I'd be more than happy with.

I know it can be very frustrating trying to find a good affordable tubby, and was in much the same position as you are now, just over 12 months ago. When you can't find what you're looking for it's all too easy to talk yourself into buying something because it's available. But it's well worth holding out for the right car in the right condition.

In my case I started out looking for a rev3 as these are generally more highly regarded due to the better turbo, head gasket, etc, etc. But quickly found the good ones were generally more than I could afford.

So I went for a rev2 in really nice condition for the year, no clunking suspension, no gear crunching and a good clean body. It took me a few months to find and it's not the fastest or most powerful tubby on the block, but hell its fun to drive, and certainly put a smile on my face every time I jumped in it - well until a kind lady ran into the back of me, but that's another story.

Just don't rush things. The right car will show up, and you'll hopefully know it right when you see it in the flesh and talk to the owner. :thumleft:

Thats some very good advice there Paul :thumleft:

It was more or less the conclusion I was coming to, I think thats one of the reasons I rushed into buying and backing out of that car in my other post.

I was in to big a rush to get a tubby, and thought "that looks like a bargain, dont want to miss out" and now looking back I can see what trouble that could get me in.

Guess I'll have to play with my current Toy car for a while longer and hold out for the right one.
