Hi all,

I've done mine but to blue. Its simple just follow shinny's explanation and it works well. I've got a few issues with mine that I need to work on light spead isn't quite good enough. I'm also working on the heater controls.

Slight side track.

Are the bulbs in heater controls simple easy to source from a parts supplier place or something stupid and special.

They are indeed, they have a plastic base and simply twist out of the heater unit.

You just need to remove the heater from the dash centre panel but you don't need to take it apart to remove or refit them.

im sure there would be so many more bulbs than 3 in a mk2 heater control unit each switch has its own seperate 2 lights 1 for showing its on and the other lighting up the actual picture on the button ?

we talking about the same unit here ?

Hi Alan, good to have you back on the forum again buddy :thumleft:

I've done the mod and would try and avoid green as firstly it changes the tone of the gel/actetate that it's trying to illuminate and secondly, it will make the needles look pants as the red actually looks completely flat and dark.

I know this as I've tried it with blue and the result was not very impressive. Red is better but I have done this:

I used flat white SMD bulbs that simply slot in where the OEM ones go and don't give out any hot spots. I've also used red acetate as the SMDs are so bright they dilute the colour of the gauges. The best bit was I used some special regenerating paint to bring the luminosity back to he needles and it worked a treat.

I bought 2 tubes of the paint for around£20 and I still have one unopened along with plenty of spare acetate and I might even have some SMDs left if you need any.

I wouldn't go green for that reason but thw white with red acetate is very sharp and reminds me of the dash on newer cars, so makes teh 2 a lot more modern but keeps the OEM stamp.

Yeps and without breaking it open there is 3 screw in type bulbs.

1. Around ac switch
2. Around air flow position buttons
3. Below flow controls around the temperature selection area.

Maybe more but not pukked apart yet and assume they will be main ones to make display fronts readable at night as mines just plain black lol.

No worries Al, I've plenty of bits around the place if you need them though.

Remember not to replace the fuel warning light with an LED as it needs a filament bulb to pull the correct voltage to work.
